Starting salary for this position is: $42.05 - $89.48 per hour based on workload category. This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro‑rated according to the amount of workload assigned. Spokane Colleges reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA.

About Us

Spokane Falls Community College is seeking qualified candidates for consideration for employment as an Adjunct Music Instructor in Class Piano. This is a primarily in‑person instructional position but may include some online teaching components.

We are currently seeking applications for an adjunct (part‑time) teaching position for both first‑ and second‑year Class Piano courses.

About the Music Instructor – Class Piano - Adjunct _ Spokane Falls Community College

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach college‑level courses in class piano and private piano lessons in modalities aligned with departmental needs (for example, in-person, hybrid, or online). Courses may include group piano for non‑majors and beginning through intermediate instruction, with the potential to teach additional courses such as Choir, Music Appreciation, History of Jazz, or History of Popular Music in future quarters.
  • Develop and communicate clear course expectations and grading criteria through syllabi, assignments, and instructional materials; evaluate student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Teach and model fundamental piano and musicianship skills, such as reading notation, rhythm, technique, scales, chords, and basic harmony, while supporting students with varying levels of experience.
  • Use effective teaching strategies, including guided practice, listening, and applied skill development, to support student achievement of course outcomes. When teaching history‑based courses, incorporate listening, critical thinking, and cultural context.
  • Maintain regular and reasonable availability to students through scheduled office hours and college‑approved communication tools.
  • Maintain accurate records for attendance (as applicable) and grades in accordance with college policies and deadlines.
  • Maintain professional standards in all interactions with students, colleagues, and the college community.
  • Comply with applicable state, federal, and institutional policies and procedures related to instruction and grading.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Music, Piano, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in piano performance and the ability to model proper technique.
  • Ability to teach basic and advanced piano to individuals and group piano, including fundamental keyboard skills such as reading notation, rhythm, scales, and basic harmony.
  • Ability to effectively teach and engage students with varying levels of musical experience.
