Overview
Special Education Assistant / ISE-203 supports the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self‑contained classrooms, assists in implementing instructional plans, monitors student behavior during non‑classroom time, provides information to school personnel, and attends IEP meetings.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under teacher direction to allow all students to participate.
- Administer materials and assignments (tests, homework, grades, etc.) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress.
- Administer first aid and medical assistance as required.
- Provide personal care support for students with medical conditions or physical limitations.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations on first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.
- Confer with special education and mainstream teachers regularly to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Communicate with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders to provide progress information.
- Implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders to meet educational goals and ensure safety.
- Instruct students in academic, social, and daily living skills in individual and group settings.
- Maintain instructional materials and student records to ensure availability and reliable information.
- Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments to provide a safe learning environment.
- Perform related duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the work unit.
Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; otherwise reports to the Special Education Supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge- Basic math skills including fractions, percents, and ratios.
- Ability to read manuals, write documents in prescribed formats, and follow complex oral instructions.
- Instructional procedures, age‑appropriate activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, stages of child development and behavior.
- Follow safety practices.

- Gather and collate data using defined processes.

Work under direct supervision, lead and coordinate others, and operate within a defined budget.
Working EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting up to 50 lb, frequent stooping, kneeling, crawling, and handling medically fragile children. The job requires approximately 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing.
Education- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one of the following:
- Qualified score on the Education Testing Service para‑educator assessment.
- Associate degree or higher.
- 72 quarter credits (48 semester credits) at 100‑level or higher.
- Completed an apprenticeship as a para‑educator in a Washington State program.

Preferred ExperienceExperience working with children.
Certificates & LicensesValid Washington State driver’s license or equivalent proof of mobility.
Continuing EducationSecure Training, CPR, First Aid.
ClearancesCriminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.
