Job Summary
The Jr/Sr High School Drama Club Sponsor (Half) is responsible for directing and managing the school's theater program. This role includes planning and conducting auditions, rehearsals, and performances; teaching acting techniques and stage skills; mentoring student performers; and fostering teamwork, creativity, and confidence.
The coach collaborates with school staff, parents, and volunteers to coordinate productions, oversee stage operations, ensure student safety, and manage production schedules and budgets. The Drama Sponsor promotes student participation in the performing arts while supporting the educational goals and policies of the school.
The goal is to provide an opportunity for students to create, learn, and express themselves through drama studies and activities. This sponsor will aid Fort Madison's students in their ability to see a different perspective from their own through research and theater study and also provide our students with an opportunity to showcase their talents through performances.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Sponsors the high school drama
- This position is a half role working in together with another half Drama Sponsor role.
- Designs and conducts recruitment/outreach activities to attract new theatre participants.
- Instructs acting techniques and principles to individuals and groups.
- Instructs proper enunciation, diction, and voice development for performing on the stage.
- Instructs vocal and body expression to teach acting styles, character development, and personality projection.
- Produces and directs plays utilizing appropriate materials for school and public performances.
- Works with the Activities Director and Building Administration to determine the number of plays and public performance required each school year.
- Auditions students to select cast and assign parts.
- Rehearses and drills students to ensure they've memorized their roles.
- Assigns non-performing students to backstage/production roles.
- Works with Activities Director to ensure that all royalties, rental fees, and other fees/bills associated with a production are paid and maintains an accurate record of all expenses and receipts.
- Secures and reserves rehearsal and performance facilities with building administrators.
- Oversees proper organization and storage of theatrical materials and school-owned equipment.
- Organizes, plans, and directs the respective plays/performances including being responsible for:
- All publicity and programs
- Costuming and property rentals/purchases
- Lighting and sound design and application
- Set design and construction
- Organizing and managing ticket sales
- Developing a rehearsal schedule
- Ensure student safety and appropriate conduct during all activities per district policies.
- Other responsibilities in this role assigned by Activities Director or Building Administration.
- Reports to:
Activities Director and Building Administration.
- Basic understanding of theater royalties
- Experience in performances
- Experience in directing
- Length of assignment and compensation determined by the district's extracurricular salary schedule.
- Must meet all district requirements for extracurricular activity sponsors and advisor.

Physical RequirementsBending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking. May be required to be able to lift 50 lbs. or more if assisting with stage sets.
