Overview
The Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 supports the supervision, care, and instruction of special‑needs students in regular or self‑contained classrooms. The role includes implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior during non‑classroom times, providing information to school personnel, and attending IEP meetings. The position is assigned to a student in the Resource Service pathway.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under teacher direction to enable participation of all special education students.
- Administer tests, homework, grading papers, folders, and related materials to assist teachers in evaluating student progress.
- Provide first‑aid and medical assistance as required.
- Assist students with personal care needs related to medical conditions or physical limitations.
- Attend meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR) to acquire and convey job‑related information.
- Consult regularly with teachers to evaluate special‑education progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Communicate with teachers, parents, and other stakeholders about student progress per individual education programs.
- Direct and implement behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions, ensuring safety and a consistent environment.
- Instruct students in academic, social, and daily living skills in individual and group settings to reinforce instructional objectives and meet individual program goals.
- Maintain instructional materials and student files/records to ensure availability and reliability of information.
- Monitor students during assigned periods across various school environments to aid safety and positive learning.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective operation of the work unit.
Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; otherwise reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.

- Basic signing may be required.
Work under direct supervision, using standardized procedures; lead, guide, and coordinate others; operate within a defined budget; utilize resources from other work units as needed; and continuously impact the organization’s services.
Working EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Students may require toileting, diaper changes, tube feeding, or assistance with menstruation. The job is typically 45% sitting, 25% walking, and 30% standing in a clean, healthy environment.
Education & Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent plus at least one of the following:
- Qualified score on the Education Testing Service para educator assessment.
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the one‑hundred level or higher.
- Completed apprenticeship as a para educator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
- Preferred:
Experience working with children.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License or equivalent mobility evidence.
- CPR, First Aid, and Secure Training.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Background Clearance.
