Overview
The job of Special Education Assistant/ISE-203 is to assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or in a self‑contained classroom; to assist in implementing plans for instruction; to monitor student behavior during non‑classroom time; to provide information to appropriate school personnel; and to attend IEP meetings. This position is assigned to the extended resources service pathway.
EssentialFunctions
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the teacher to provide opportunities for all special education students to participate.
- Administers materials and assignments (e.g., tests, homework, grades, papers, folders) to assist the teacher in evaluating student progress and organizing individual student needs.
- Administers first aid and medical assistance as required to provide appropriate care for injured children.
- Assists students with personal care needs due to medical condition and/or physical limitations to allow them to function in the school environment.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information relevant to job functions.
- Confers regularly with teachers (special education and/or mainstream) to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
- Communicates with teachers and/or parents (e.g., phone calls, e‑mails, parent‑teacher meetings, recording student progress in a notebook) to provide information related to the student's progress as established in their individual educational program.
- Directs and implements behavioral plans for students with behavior disorders or other conditions to assist in meeting special education students’ needs, protect safety, and provide a consistent environment.
- Instructs students in a variety of activities in individual and group settings (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement remediation plans, and ensure student success.
- Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g., adapting instructional materials, checking papers, attendance, setting up adapted projects) to ensure availability of items and reliable information.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within various school environments (e.g., rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to aid students and provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Performs related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Reports to the building principal if assigned through staffing formulas; if based centrally, reports to the assigned Special Education Supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge
- Basic math, including fractions, percents, and ratios; ability to read manuals, write documents in prescribed formats, and present information; understanding of complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
- Specific knowledge required for satisfactory performance includes Instructional procedures and practices; age‑appropriate student activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development/behavior.
Skills
- Ability to perform multiple non‑technical tasks and adapt skills to changing job conditions.
- Specific skills include adherence to safety practices; operating standard office equipment and software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Abilities
- Gathering and collating data; using job‑related equipment.
- Flexibility to work with others in varied circumstances and to operate equipment using standardized methods.
