Department:SCC Apprenticeship/Journeyman

Compensation:The instructor will be paid a range of $49.25 and $52.12 per hour for a maximum of 132 hours per quarter. Hourly rate to be determined by Spokane Community College.
This is an adjunct (part-time) position. Compensation will be pro-rated according to the amount of workload assigned. Spokane Colleges reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE), which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

About Us

Meatcutter Apprenticeship Instructors teach aspiring Meat cutters within the Washington State Meat cutters and Fishmongers Program (https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below).)

The Washington State Meat cutters and Fishmongers Program is a partnership between UFCW Local 3000, the State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries, retail meat and grocery employers, and local community colleges. This program is administered by WeTrain Washington.

The goal of the Washington State Meat cutters and Fishmongers Program is to share industry knowledge, skills, and techniques to develop apprentices into highly skilled journey Meat cutters. The Meat cutters Apprenticeship is a two-year program.

The program runs from September-June over three academic quarters based on the college calendar – no teaching during the summer months. Instructors average about four hours of in-person instruction per week.

Classes will begin for the fall quarter on September 8, 2026. All classes take place between 5:30pm and 9:30pm. First review of applications will occur on 08/03/2026, interested applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Meatcutter Apprentice Instructors Report to the Apprenticeship Committee and Spokane Community College.

Instructors are expected to provide the following to Apprentice Meat cutters:

  • Teach up to 288 hours of Related Supplemental Instruction (each of the two years of the program has
    144 hours of RSI)- in-class and cutting instruction
  • Homework Assignments
  • Oral & Written Quarterly Reports and Presentations
  • Support apprentice reporting of 4000 hours of On-the-Job hours (each of the two years of the program aligns with 2000 hours of OJT)

At the time of graduation, Meatcutter apprentices will receive a Certificate of Completion from the State of Washington, a certificate of completion from Spokane Community College, and an engraved knife with the year of graduation.

All graduated students will be entered into the L&I website for reference by potential employers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified and/or Licensed Journey Meatcutter
  • Minimum of three years of experience in the industry
  • Deep understanding of the products, production, and sale of fresh meats in the retail grocery industry
  • Expertise in the use of a variety of knives and meat processing equipment; safe handling of this equipment
  • Knowledge of food and personal safety
  • Complete industry-standard knowledge of primal and retail cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and poultry
  • Being a life-long learner open to continuous improvement as an educator and Meatcutter
  • A familiarity with and/or willingness to learn technologies associated with instruction and program administration
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the development of the meat cutting workforce
  • Be an excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A passion for teaching and familiarity with best practices of adult education
  • Comfort enhancing curriculum with real life experience that engages apprentices in every aspect of this skilled trade
  • Familiarity with the on-the-job training that apprentices receive at a variety of employers including Fred Meyers, Albertsons, Safeway, and QFC.
  • Familiarity with UFCW 3000 collective bargaining agreements
