Behavior Intervention Specialist

The role of the Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS) is to assist and support building staff and administration in improving student performance in academic, behavior, and social skills for all students who are in need of accommodations or struggling in the school setting.

Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blending learning strategies.

POSITION REQUIREMENT:
This position requires a Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certificate in School Counseling, School Psychology or Social Work with a Master's Degree in School Counseling, School Psychology or Social Work; or a Washington State Special Education Teaching Certificate with a Master's Degree in Special Education. SALARY:
Salary depends upon applicable prior certificated experience, approved credits, earned degrees, and the FTE of the position.

Responsibilities
  • Support the cognitive processing of others through the planning, observation, and reflection process.
  • Provide ongoing professional development trainings to certificated and classified staff, adjusting the workday when needed, and as approved by the supervisor.
  • Support building staff in developing early intervention strategies for struggling students.
  • Conduct observations and make behavioral recommendations for at-risk students.
  • Help guide buildings in conducting informal assessments and FBA's, developing success plans or Behavior Intervention Plans for students and track progress and recommend changes as needed.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of individually tailored interventions or formal Behavior Intervention Plans for meeting the social/emotional needs of students.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate small or large group sessions with students, focusing on providing intervention on a variety of needed skills.
  • Provide expertise in social skills training.
  • Support Child Study Teams, MDT, and the 504 process.
  • Actively engage in problem solving and crisis intervention as an individual and team member.
  • Use knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, district policies and procedures in working with staff, principal, and supervisor to ensure compliance.
  • Provide technical assistance, guidance, and participation regarding district's discipline policy and procedure.
  • Support building staff in the determination of the least restrictive placement options for students.
  • Work cooperatively with school, support staff, and programs for the benefit of students.
  • Provide referral and linkage services to alternative programs.
  • Support transition of students entering and exiting programs including grade level transitions.
  • Participate in the development of school-parent partnerships and participate in problem-solving meetings.
  • Assist families by referring/linking them with community resources.
  • Create and support a safe learning environment using strategies to resolve barriers that could impact the capacity of students to learn.
  • Collect data needed to determine effectiveness of interventions.
  • Attend monthly meetings.
  • Have working knowledge of 504, IEP's and special education laws.
  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Masters degree in Special Education with a Special Education endorsement (preferred focus in Behavior Intervention) or Masters in Social Work, School Counseling, School Psychology, with an Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certification at initial or continuing level.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience to successfully perform the responsibilities listed.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable laws and district policies and their application to providing services to students and to supporting staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in implementing behavioral interventions.
  • Excellent communication skills required (oral, verbal, and written).
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, and follow through.
