Reports To: VP of Data Center Design
Applied Digital is the epicenter of AI innovation, designing cutting‑edge data center solutions for high‑performance computing and AI workloads. The Data Center Electrical Design Engineering SME is the authority for electrical engineering design across our data center portfolio, establishing and governing electrical design standards, performing rigorous design reviews, and ensuring that all electrical systems meet safety, reliability, scalability, constructability, and long‑term operability.
This position is not a day‑to‑day production design role; it owns the electrical design intent and provides technical oversight and approval of designs developed by external engineering firms, EPC partners, and internal stakeholders. The role reports to the Vice President of Data Center Design & Engineering and works cross‑functionally with Construction, Operations, Commissioning, Safety, and Executive Leadership.
- Act as the primary electrical design authority for Applied Digital Data Center projects.
- Own and maintain electrical design standards, basis of design (BOD) templates, and reference architectures.
- Define design requirements for medium‑voltage and low‑voltage power distribution systems, grounding and bonding, protection schemes, and redundancy philosophies.
- Approve deviations from established electrical standards and document technical justifications.
- Perform detailed reviews of electrical design deliverables at all project phases (concept, schematic, design development, IFC).
- Evaluate designs produced by third‑party engineering firms, EPCs, and equipment vendors for compliance with Applied Digital standards, codes, and best practices.
- Identify design risks related to safety, constructability, maintainability, and operational reliability.
- Provide clear, actionable review comments and participate in resolution of design issues.
- Partner with Mechanical, Controls, Network, and Architectural SMEs to ensure coordinated, integrated data center designs.
- Support Construction and Commissioning teams by resolving design‑related questions, RFIs, and field‑driven design clarifications.
- Collaborate with Operations teams to ensure designs align with real‑world operational needs and maintenance strategies.
- Ensure electrical designs comply with applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA, IEEE, IEC, NESC, UL, local AHJs, etc.).
- Serve as a technical resource during AHJ interactions, utility coordination, and third‑party peer reviews.
- Stay current on emerging technologies, codes, and industry trends relevant to hyperscale and high‑density data centers.
- Incorporate lessons learned from construction and operations back into electrical design standards.
- Support long‑term data center platform strategy, including scalability for AI, HPC, and high‑density computing loads.
- Contribute to executive‑level technical decision‑making and capital planning discussions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
- 10+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience, with significant exposure to data center or mission‑critical facility design.
- Deep expertise in data center electrical systems, including utility interconnections and substations, UPS systems and battery technologies, generators and paralleling switch gear, low‑voltage distribution and branch circuitry, grounding, bonding, and protection systems.
- Proven experience reviewing and governing third‑party engineering designs.
- Strong understanding of constructability, commissioning, and operational impacts of design decisions.
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience supporting hyperscale, AI, or high‑density data center environments.
- Experience working directly with EPC firms, utilities, and AHJs.
- Familiarity with international codes and standards for global data center…
