Job Description

The Air Quality Monitoring intern will join the Impacts Analysis Group within the National Laboratory of the Rockies Strategic Energy Analysis Center (SEAC), supporting research on community air quality monitoring in Kern County and the San Joaquin Valley. The role focuses on gathering and synthesizing best practices for sensor networks, reviewing existing programs, developing low‑cost sensor designs, collecting and analyzing environmental data, and creating community science materials.

Internship

Responsibilities
  • Research and synthesize best practices for community air quality monitoring networks
  • Review existing air quality monitoring programs in California and the region
  • Develop design configurations for low‑cost sensor networks
  • Assist with environmental data collection and analysis
  • Help develop community science and educational materials
Notes

This position prefers in‑person work based in Golden, CO on the NLR South Table Mountain Campus.

Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Undergraduate: full‑time student in a bachelor’s degree program
  • Post Undergraduate: bachelor’s degree earned within the past 12 months; eligible for up to one year internship
  • Graduate: full‑time master’s student
  • Post Graduate: master’s degree earned within the past 12 months; eligible for up to one year internship
  • PhD: completed master’s degree and enrolled as a PhD student
Additional

Required Qualifications
  • Current undergraduate student in Environmental Science, Engineering, Atmospheric Science, or related field
  • Strong interest in carbon management technologies and/or environmental monitoring
  • Basic data handling and technical documentation skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills; ability to work collaboratively
  • Self‑motivated, organized, and able to work independently on assigned tasks
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with carbon management technologies (e.g., DAC, CCS, BiCRS)
  • Experience with low‑cost air quality sensors or environmental field data collection
  • Experience publishing technical content to technical audiences
  • Experience presenting in public forums and creating professional‑quality PowerPoint presentations
  • Experience writing educational materials for diverse student audiences
  • Exposure to life cycle assessment (LCA) or techno‑economic analysis (TEA)
  • Prior experience working on applied research or community science projects
Other Requirements
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Travel to Kern County or site visits at NLR may be required
