Summary
Under supervision (Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I), general supervision (Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II), or direction (Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III), performs a variety of duties essential to the operation of a major wastewater treatment, disposal, and reclamation facility on an assigned shift. Inspects, operates, monitors, and maintains a variety of facilities, equipment, and systems involved in various processes of the wastewater treatment plant facility.
Monitors plant operation through visual observation and computer screens; regulates flows; performs chemical analysis and tests; and performs a variety of related duties to ensure the facility's final effluent is of the best quality in order to protect all downstream receiving waters and their users while utilizing plant resources wisely and efficiently.
- Perform the full range of duties related to plant operations; operate a variety of facilities, systems, equipment, pumps, and valves; learn to operate and maintain new systems and equipment as necessary.
- Perform a variety of equipment maintenance duties; inspect, remove, clean, lubricate, backwash, repair, maintain, and reinstall equipment related to a variety of wastewater treatment plant facilities, systems, grinders, drip traps, scales, centrifuges, hydro vanes, tanks, pumps, valves, and piping systems; clean and calibrate meters and probes; perform general housekeeping of all areas associated with assigned facilities.
- Perform a variety of process control related duties; collect samples from various plant processes for chemical and biological analysis; operate and calibrate automatic samplers; collect storm channel water samples outside the plant as necessary; perform a variety of tests and analysis; measure primary and secondary settling basin sludge depths; perform mathematical calculations including those related to flows, areas, volume, weight, force, pressure, chemical dosage, and related tests;
evaluate laboratory testing results and calculations and implement results in operational control. - Investigate and acknowledge alarms throughout the wastewater treatment facility; monitor, poll, and respond to lift station alarms; locate and notify standby personnel to respond to lift station alarms; provide support, security, and communication to maintenance personnel at lift stations when responding to alarms.
- Monitor and maintain leak detection system.
- Perform a variety of record‑keeping duties; create new log books and properly store old records and log books; ensure NPDBS permits are properly maintained and available.
- Perform a variety of duties in response to power outage emergencies; operate, monitor, adjust, and maintain backup generators; respond to power outages by properly resetting, restarting, and bringing systems essential to proper plant operations back online; maintain proper fuel levels in generators and storage tanks.
- Perform a variety of duties in response to wet‑weather emergencies; operate, monitor, and adjust plant drainage system; place sand bags around excess storage pond perimeter; stage, operate, monitor, and lubricate emergency trash pumps.
- Perform a variety of public relations related duties; conduct tours and provide educational information; receive, investigate, document, and respond to odor complaints; receive telephone inquiries from the public; answer questions and direct inquiries to appropriate personnel as necessary.
- Participate in a variety of training activities; study equipment manuals for all facility equipment; receive training on new equipment and processes as well as initial and periodic refresher training on processes, procedures, systems, and equipment related to assignment; maintain familiarity with all standard operating procedures pertaining to equipment and plant processes; may provide training to new operators‑in‑training on equipment and plant processes.
