Engineering technicians provide progressive levels of engineering technology support for Public Works tasks in one or more engineering technician areas of expertise, including records archiving, testing, surveying, permitting, inspection, road data analysis, civil design, civil plans review, and survey plans review. Engineering technicians may promote within their existing position, with progressive levels of duty and responsibility.
Engineering Tech IIEntry-level technicians directly support more experienced technicians. Incumbent can perform any engineering technician duty once they are trained for the task. Alternatively, they may aid the work of a journey-level engineering technician as an apprentice for work they are still learning to do.
Engineering Tech IIIJourney-level technicians are skilled to independently work in at least one engineering technician area of expertise. Journey-level technicians provide for the training and work experiences of apprentices.
- Archiving: Provide records archiving and organization for all Public Works records, maps, and digital files.
- Testing: Provide for the field and lab materials testing process.
- Surveying: Provide for design surveying, drone mapping, and inspection spot check surveying. Occasional construction surveying may be required. However, construction surveying is typically conducted by the contractor.
- Permitting: Provide for the processing of all Public Works issued permits.
- Maintenance Inspection: Provide maintenance inspection for existing roadway features within publicly maintained easements and rights-of-way.
- Development Inspection: Provide construction inspection services for private projects within publicly maintained easements and rights-of-way.
- Capital Projects Inspection:
- (Special Duty) Provide construction inspection services for all public projects within publicly maintained easements and rights-of-way. This duty requires special construction, agency reports, bid documents, and contract documents knowledge to conduct. This is considered a special duty for the department.
- Road Data Analysis:
- (Special Duty) Provide for the recording, mapping, and query analysis of all road data. This duty requires high level GIS Software skills to conduct. This is considered a special duty for the department.
- Civil Design:
- (Special Duty) Prepare plan and profile drawings for capital projects under the direction of the Design Engineer or County Engineer. This duty requires high-level CADD Software skills to conduct. This is considered a special duty for the department.
- Civil Plan Review:
- (Special Duty) Provide primary plan review, storm report review, and traffic report review for private development projects. This duty requires special civil design knowledge to conduct. This is considered a special duty for the department.
