Salary: $98,064.00 – $ Annually (scheduled 2% raise effective July 1, 2026)

Location: Spokane County, Spokane, WA (Eastern Region Office)

Job Type: Full Time - Permanent

Remote Employment: Flexible/Hybrid; initial 30 days full‑time in office, then at least one office day per week thereafter

Responsibilities
  • Represent the agency in technical reviews and negotiations for complex industrial facilities as a Professional Engineer.
  • Review engineering documents for industrial facilities to ensure continued or increased protection of water quality in collaboration with other Ecology engineers.
  • Author waste discharge permits to protect surface and groundwater by deriving permit conditions based on legal and technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Toxic Cleanup and Hazardous Waste Programs to provide expertise on water quality permitting for metals, mining, and milling operations, including site closures and remediations.
  • Assist with site inspections and provide technical assistance to ensure compliance with wastewater permits and help facilities meet their water quality obligations.
Qualifications Required
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Washington or an equivalent jurisdiction.
  • Five (5) years of experience in environmental engineering.
Desired
  • Experience with land treatment, land application, water reuse facilities, and projects for industrial facilities, particularly in metals, minerals, milling, mining, cogeneration energy, hydroelectric energy, or pulp and paper mills.
  • Experience providing wastewater treatment to protect state waters from toxics and chemicals of emerging concern.
  • Experience mentoring or leading project teams.
  • Knowledge of water quality laws, rules, and permitting in Washington.
