Brief Description of Duties

Incumbent serves as Lieutenant (Supervisory Police Officer) in Police Operations, for the UDC Police Department, a component of the Division of Public Safety and Emergency Management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and maintains law and order; observes, reports, and responds to illegal and unauthorized activity occurring on university owned and controlled premises through District laws, ordinances, enforcement of university policies, procedures and protocols, and the District of Columbia Official Code.
  • Oversees the conduct of preliminary investigations of crimes, accidents, disposal of complaints, and the recovery of stolen property, equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Maintains responsibility/accountability for all shift activity and assigned duties during their respective tour of duty, to include (but not limited to) the following:
    Criminal/non-criminal calls for service, interviews and investigations, case activity/reports, administrative reports/paperwork, equipment issuance, monitoring of special details/events, time keeping, leave tracking, and personnel deployment and notifications.
  • Maintains immediate and constant accessibility to assigned personnel, working closely with personnel to ensure that directives, policies, and procedures are communicated effectively and executed according to established protocol.
  • Investigates and resolves customer and employee complaints; assesses and addresses other unsatisfactory conditions pertaining to the quality of university operations.
  • Assigns personnel and participates in community service activities, employs the practices and techniques of community oriented and problem-oriented policing.
  • Establishes and sustains positive/effective working partnerships with direct reports, supervisors, University officials and constituencies, and various other internal/external entities for the purpose of clear and timely communications/information sharing.
  • Responds to calls for and/or coordinates service (until relived) requiring the assistance of, and collaboration with, other local law enforcement and emergency response agencies.(i.e., natural disaster, environmental hazards or risks; fire, medical emergencies, manmade emergencies etc.).
  • Conducts timely and appropriate (oral and written) job performance counseling and coaching with all respective personnel with appropriate. Essential duties include (but not limited to) the following: evaluates work performance of subordinates, gives proper advise/council, prepares performance appraisals, engages personnel in goal setting as it relates to job performance, and makes recommendations for disciplinary actions as directed.
Other Duties
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Assists in the responsible management of the public safety budget.
  • Assists in the advancing of the use of technology to forward the mission of the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management and the University.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Police Science or a related field of study, or possession of a high school diploma and three years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Must have verifiable satisfactory police patrol experience at the Sergeant level at a recognized law enforcement agency.
  • Must have successfully completed a Federal, State, County, Municipal Police, or Consortium Campus Law Enforcement Academy (of at least 250 hours of classroom instruction) or comparable police training course that included instruction in police department procedures and methods, and local law and regulations.
