Position Overview
Corrections Specialist 3 (CS3) within the Community Corrections Division, Section 1, Spokane, WA. This internal, full‑time, non‑permanent appointment is slated for approximately six months. The position works for the Family and Offender Sentencing Alternative (FOSA) and Parenting Sentencing Alternative (PSA) program located at 1717 W Broadway, Spokane, WA 99201. Shift hours are Monday‑Friday, 0800‑1630. This role is open exclusively to current permanent Washington State Department of Corrections employees.
Responsibilities- Conduct investigations in accordance with Washington State Law and agency policy within prescribed time frames.
- Supervise participants in the Parenting Sentencing Alternative in accordance with Washington State Law, Interstate Compact regulations, and agency policy within prescribed time frames.
- Engage with participants and their families to build the five Protective Factors:
- Parental Resilience
- Social Connections
- Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
- Concrete Support in Times of Need
- Social and Emotional Competence of Children
- Enforce supervision conditions and the law.
- Lead other case managers.
- Perform other duties as assigned and necessary.
Minimum required qualifications for all cases listed below:
- Armed staff must have the ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm.
Note: Staff not qualifying for legacy status must be armed, possess and use a firearm under federal and state law, maintain qualifications, and complete ongoing training. - Must possess a valid vehicle operator’s license in the state of Washington.
- AND must possess one of the following:
- A master’s degree in sociology, social work, psychology, criminology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution recognized by CHEA or the U.S. Department of Education, or a foreign equivalent; and two years of professional case management experience in adult or juvenile corrections or a closely related field, including at least three of the following: making field visits, writing reports, assessing cases and making recommendations, referring people to appropriate resources, presenting cases in court/hearings;
and one year of experience collaborating with other agencies or local governments on direct family re‑unification services or family‑based treatment/counseling. - A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, and three years of professional case management experience with the same subset of skills as above, plus one year collaborative agency experience.
- An associate’s degree from an accredited institution, and five years’ experience as a Community Corrections Officer within the Washington State Department of Corrections, plus one year collaborative agency experience.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent, and seven years’ experience as a Community Corrections Officer within the Washington State Department of Corrections, plus one year collaborative agency experience.
Professional case management includes activities such as: assessment of risk factors; designing, monitoring, and facilitating treatment plans; determining and making referrals to resources such as substance abuse or family counseling; maintaining official records and tracking client progress; and assisting individuals who cannot independently access community resources.
Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment- Complete a felony disclosure form prior to employment and submit to a criminal background check.
- Complete and pass the psychological screening (Battery Exam and Psychological Interview/Evaluation).
- Submit to drug testing in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and agency policy.
- Successfully complete employee orientation and all mandatory training within mandated time frames.
- Become familiar with and comply with all department policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
- Successfully complete the Firearms Academy and Control/Impedance Tactics training within prescribed time frames, including maintaining eligibility to possess and use firearms, maintaining qualifications, completing requalification training, and yearly criminal history clearance.
