Americans United for Life, a national law and policy organization, seeks a Policy Associate/Counsel (Federal Affairs) to assist with all aspects of AUL’s extensive law and policy program, emphasizing the pro‑life mission with a primary focus on federal issues.
The role involves legislative drafting, testimony, consulting, and collaborating with pro‑life allies to advance legislative priorities. The Associate will represent AUL at conferences and events, produce educational and media materials, and research and develop policy documents.
The position reports to the Government Affairs Director and works under supervision of legal interns and externs.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities- Draft and consult on federal legislation; provide legal and policy advice to allies.
- Write testimony and talking points; represent AUL at conferences and events.
- Research, develop, and publish legislative reports, model legislation, and policy guides.
- Assist with legal components of the AUL website and special reports.
- Draft amicus briefs and op‑eds; represent AUL in media.
- Track and analyze federal life‑related legislation; maintain an annual legislative report.
- Stay current on legal activity, judicial opinions, and relevant laws.
- Participate in meetings and complete additional projects as assigned.
Legal interns and externs as assigned.
QualificationsPosition requires:
- Law degree from an accredited law school and bar membership OR equivalent federal policy work experience.
- Minimum two years of experience in a legal or policy position.
- Effective communication, both verbal and written.
- Ability to convey complex issues clearly.
- Strong computer skills including Internet, Excel, and Word.
- Problem‑solving, project management, time management, and prioritization.
- Physical ability to sit at a desk, use a keyboard, read documents, and occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
Office setting, climate–controlled, well‑lit, moderate noise level.
Travel RequirementsRegular travel required; use of personal vehicle may be necessary. Proof of a valid driver’s license, acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance may be required.
