Job Summary:
The Senior Planner performs professional planning activities involving maintaining and updating the Comprehensive Plan, reviewing proposed development for consistency with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code, and conducting a variety of planning studies. The position coordinates activities with County Departments, other local governments, and state, regional and federal agencies. The employee also represents the Department before citizen groups, state and other agencies, county committees, the Planning Commission and the Board of County Commissioners.
- Prepare updates of the Comprehensive Plan, review proposed land‑use changes and text amendments, and review changes to the Land Development Code and related documents.
- Review proposed development plans and monitor development activity on an ongoing basis.
- Perform specialized research and analysis in areas of land use, transportation, public facility planning and financing and other planning‑related issues.
- Represent the Director in meetings and before the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master’s Degree in Planning and at least two years of professional planning experience; OR Bachelor’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning and at least four years of professional planning experience; OR Bachelor’s Degree in another related field and at least six years of professional planning experience. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree will have the required experience reduced by two years with certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
- Experience with GIS and AutoCAD (preferred).
- Valid State of Florida driver’s license with a clean driving history.
- Any combination of education and experience may be substituted so long as it provides the desired skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
Additional qualifications include the ability to analyze and synthesize data, recommend solutions, communicate orally and in writing, and create graphic representations (maps). Applicants should possess solid knowledge of applicable state growth‑management statutes, zoning, master planning, environmental planning, transportation, design, GIS, and economic development.
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
The position is primarily sedentary, with 75% of time spent in a stationary position. The employee may need to move within the office, access files, retrieve maps and documents, operate office equipment, and occasionally move boxes, files, or large maps weighing up to 15 pounds.
