Position

Maternal/Child Health Technician
:
Full Time, 7:30 pm – 8:00 am (Nights), three 12-hour shifts, including every other weekend. Pay Range: $ (actual offers are based upon the applicant's relevant experience pertaining to the requirements of the position).

The MCHT assists patients with newborns with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care to non-acutely ill patients, and provides support in the LDR, Operating Rooms of Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Transitional Nursery, NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). The role includes helping maintain a safe and clean environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assists during obstetrical surgical procedures: cesarean section, Dilation & Curettage (D&C), tubal ligation, and cerclage placement and removal.
  • Under the direction of the RN, performs nursing care activities according to established guidelines: surgical preparations; assisting patients to the bathroom and/or out of bed;
    Foley catheter insertion or discontinuation; measuring and recording intake and output and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, height, blood pressure, pain) in the EMR; applying non-sterile dressings; obtaining specimens; blood draws, finger sticks; inserts intravenous lines/saline locks; performs PKUs, CCHD and hearing screenings; ambulating, turning, positioning and transporting patients; providing mouth care and exercise to patients.
  • Records observations of patient condition, care provided and patient responses; reports changes to the Team Leader or Charge Nurse.
  • Observes, documents and monitors vital signs; measures and records intake and output; collaborates with the Unit Secretary for labor statistics.
  • Practices infection control procedures; maintains a safe, clean aseptic environment; cleans equipment; stocks rooms and supply carts; checks for and removes expired supplies; assists with hygiene and comfort of patients.
  • Collects specimens (including venipuncture), properly labels specimens and assists nursing staff with requisitioning.
  • Feeds patients including transitional and normal newborns; serves meals, snacks, ice and water as needed.
  • Assists in the admission and discharge of patients, including patient orientation to the room and unit; prepares units, rooms and beds; processes patient valuables; stocks patient rooms.
  • Responds to patient requests (including call bells) and directs to the nurse as needed.
  • Performs transport/delivery activities related to patient care and transports equipment between areas; assists with placement and assembly of equipment.
  • Checks unit equipment for malfunctions and maintains supplies; collaborates to order materials and supplies.
  • Prepares patients, supplies and equipment for labor and delivery surgical cases (e.g., circumcisions) in postpartum, NICU and nursery; transports and collects instruments, cleans and packages instruments, and resets rooms to ensure sterility and availability.
  • Controls traffic flow in labor and delivery sterile areas and ensures proper attire of personnel in the surgical area.
  • Assumes other duties related to the position and area. This description is general and not all-inclusive.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Successful completion of a hospital- or school-based training program for Operating Room Technician (ORT) or Labor and Delivery Scrub Technician.
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy course preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience as Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant and/or Scrub Technician in an acute care setting.
  • Current certification as CNA, EMT or PCT in the District of Columbia, or a Nursing Student (RN Program) with at least one year of clinical rotation;
    Surgical Technician national certification also accepted.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Completion of an approved phlebotomy course is preferred.
