OverviewThe WIC Nutrition Coordinator provides guidance and support to staff with daily clinical activities to ensure the WIC Program operates in compliance with State and Federal requirements. Coordinates the breastfeeding program and works with breastfeeding peer counselors. In collaboration with the WIC Director, coordinates the nutrition education activities and quality assurance plans for the WIC program. Supports the WIC Director in training staff and fulfilling Local Agency reporting requirements to DC Health.
Responsibilities- Provide leadership and support to all nutrition and breastfeeding staff.
- Assess client nutritional and/or health risks and prescribe food packages.
- Determine and prioritize nutritional risks of clients.
- Provide nutritional instruction in individual and group settings.
- Develop nutritional care plans for high‑risk individuals.
- Act as a Competent Professional (CPA) when needed and be responsible for the certification and nutrition education of WIC participants.
- Coordinate nutritional care with other members of the health care team to assure medical and social services.
- Provide individual instruction and follow‑up.
- Keep abreast of current research findings in maternal and child health nutrition.
- Establish and conduct programs to promote, support, and protect breastfeeding.
- Coordinate the nutrition education activities and quality assurance (QA) plans for the WIC program in collaboration with the WIC Director.
- Support the WIC Director in training staff and fulfilling Local Agency reporting requirements to DC Health.
- Report directly to the WIC Director and provide leadership and support to all nutrition and breastfeeding staff.
- Help in the development and evaluation of the WIC Program’s overall Nutrition Services Plan.
- Assist in developing the WIC Program’s policies, procedures, and guidelines that pertain to nutrition services.
- Coordinate nutrition services with other internal departments and external partners.
- Evaluate participant feedback on nutrition education and modify programs accordingly.
- Assist the WIC Director with tracking caseload, enrollment, participation, and other WIC metrics.
- Assist in compliance monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
- Provide guidance on day‑to‑day clinical practice to assure compliance with State and Federal requirements.
- Monitor training program planning, scheduling, and implementation for local agency WIC and intra‑agency clinic staff.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition education programs that address cultural and ethnic needs.
- Serve as a breastfeeding coordinator, monitor breastfeeding peer counselors as needed.
- Perform other tasks determined necessary by the Director of the WIC Program.
- Provide technical assistance and consultation on nutrition services to WIC staff and health professionals.
- Deliver in‑service training and technical assistance for staff involved in nutrition education.
- Keep current with nutrition and breastfeeding information and disseminate it to staff.
- Provide technical nutrition support in the development and revisions of State Agency Nutrition materials.
- Ensure staff deliver accurate, effective education using interactive methodologies.
- Train and mentor interns in dietetics and community nutrition.
- Assess anthropometric data, medical history, and lab values.
- Assign nutritional risk codes to clients based on guidelines.
- Prescribe food package taking into account nutritional needs, preferences, and cultural background.
- Deliver individual and group education, including substance‑use education and referrals.
- Promote and support breastfeeding among the target population and evaluate effectiveness.
- Act as breastfeeding coordinator on rotation, as needed.
- Issue and log manual and electric breast pumps.
- Refer clients to breastfeeding peer counselors or lactation specialists.
- Ensure effective operation and caseload management, maintain clinic show rate.
- Conduct community outreach to promote nutrition and the benefits of WIC.
- Ensure comprehensive medical and social services for clients.
- Promote safety, speak up about unsafe behavior, verify information, and communicate clearly.
