Overview

Summary The Social Worker is responsible for the coordination and provision of social work services to veterans and their families in the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit of the Mann-Grandstaff VAMC. The Social Worker is responsible for completing psychosocial history and assessments, advance directives, treatment planning, case management, individual, couples, and group counseling, and coordination of discharge plans for veterans admitted to the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and provide psychosocial assessments and counseling for veterans and their families in the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, discharge plans, and continuous care coordination.
  • Provide individual, couples, and group counseling as appropriate.
  • Coordinate referrals to other services and resources; collaborate with interdisciplinary teams; and support families and veterans throughout treatment and discharge planning.
  • Perform psychosocial history taking, advance directives, and case management activities.
Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
  • English Language Proficiency:
    Proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C.
  • Education:

    Master’s degree in social work from a program fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
  • Graduates of schools of social work in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until accreditation is full.
  • A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level (GS-0185). Current state requirements available at (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./T38

    Hybrid/; licensure requirement may be waived at GS-9 level pending state prerequisites (see below).
  • For GS-11 and above, the candidate must be licensed or certified.
  • At appointment, supervisor will provide written requirements for licensure/certification and deadline; failure to obtain licensure/certification may lead to removal from the GS-0185 series.
  • Loss of licensure or certification will require removal from the GS-0185 series and may result in termination.
  • Grade Determinations: GS-9 requires relevant KSAs; GS-11 requires one year of post-MSW experience (GS-9 level) and licensure/certification, or a doctoral degree in social work substituted for the required experience; see official qualification standards for full details (Qualification Standards).

Duties (GS-11 level)
  • Provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Work with patients and families facing psychiatric, medical, and social problems using individual, group, and family counseling.
  • Under close supervision handle more complex problems; assess psychosocial functioning and implement treatment plans with patient, family, and interdisciplinary team collaboration.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and community agencies; communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, treatment procedures, medications, and medical terminology.
  • Basic computer skills for drafting documents, data management, and tracking; knowledge of community resources and referrals.
