Overview
The Mainframe Systems Programmer provides support for on‑going projects that require the installation, testing, and implementation of new operating systems and other system software. The role also involves maintenance, debugging, and tuning of systems software, coordination of IOGEN work for new MF hardware, and research and evaluation of new software and hardware products.
Responsibilities- Install, test, and implement new operating systems and other system software.
- Maintain, debug, and tune system software, including z/OS components.
- Coordinate IOGEN work for new MF hardware.
- Research and evaluate new software and hardware products, assisting team members and other areas with technical questions and problem resolution.
- Monitor and tune systems software.
- Configure and maintain the integrity and data/IP security of the Mainframe’s host communication subsystems and associated program products.
- Perform TCP/IP port reserves (additions, deletions, changes).
- Perform VTAM updates (additions, deletions, changes) and VTAM PU/LU updates including Enterprise Extenders.
- Manage OSA adapters in a complex Mainframe environment.
- Configure and support network products such as Connect Direct, ASG OUTBOUND, FTP, SFTP, FTP/TLS.
- Implement AT‑TLS rules and manage digital certificates.
- Configure and manage IPSEC policies (permit/deny rules, VPN‑IPsec tunnels).
- Trace, debug, and analyze errors.
- Support client disaster recovery exercises, problem and change management, and service request management.
- Communicate regularly with technical, applications, and operational staff to ensure network connectivity and security.
- Act as a Mainframe Networking resource for internal and external department projects.
- Provide off‑hours support for software changes, on‑call rotation, and other project requirements.
- At least eight years of experience supporting the z/OS Mainframe Network environment.
- Extensive experience in Mainframe Network (VTAM) systems programming.
- Proficient with z/OS, SMP/E, TSO/ISPF, USS, SDSF, JCL.
- Experience with session management products such as TPX, Teleview, CL/Supersession, and network management products such as NETVIEW, Netmaster/TCPIP.
- Independent, excellent problem‑determination skills, and a team‑player mindset.
- Ability to set and achieve short, medium, and long‑term goals that exceed standards.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
- Experience creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans (preferred).
Primary
Location:
Homebased – Downers Grove, IL (Finley, Illinois). The position requires on‑call and off‑hours support.
