About the Torts DivisionThe Torts Division, the largest division in the Washington Attorney General’s Office, represents state agencies and employees who are sued for damages. Attorneys in the division handle cases from inception through resolution in state and federal courts throughout Washington, working with a supportive staff of paralegals and investigators.
The division has offices in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia (Tumwater), and Spokane. Telework is available in a hybrid work environment.
Benefits and CompensationCompetitive salary set within the range $82,212 – $153,996. Salaries are set according to Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA.

Attorneys in the Torts Division maintain and apply comprehensive knowledge of procedural and substantive law, work productively with client agencies, develop and execute legal strategy, engage in all aspects of discovery, communicate case developments, lead trial teams of staff, conduct jury and bench trials, and handle appeals. The work is demanding, stimulating, and rewarding, with a collegial team environment and robust professional support.
Qualifications& Experience
Applicants must be graduates of an ABA‑accredited law school or have completed the WSBA’s Rule 6 Law Clerk Program and be licensed to practice law in Washington State. Applicants who are actively pursuing admission will also be considered.

Ideal candidates will have experience in the following areas:
- Five or more years of progressive legal experience with a strong foundation in civil litigation
- Taking and defending depositions
- Handling an active civil motions practice
- Working with expert witnesses
- Engaging in alternative dispute resolution
- Trying cases in state and/or federal court
- Briefing and arguing cases on appeal
- Interacting with high‑level client representatives
- Working with people from diverse backgrounds and communication styles
