Watershed Unit Supervisor (WMS Band

The Department of Ecology is hiring a Watershed Unit Supervisor (WMS Band
1) within the Water Quality Program. The position leads a team responsible for restoring streams and protecting aquatic habitats across the 13 Eastern Region counties.
- Eastern Region Office in Spokane, WA.
- Must live within commutable distance from the duty station.
- Eligible for telework and flexible schedule options.
- Minimum of two days per week required in the office.
- Schedules may vary with position needs.

In this role, you will manage a team that identifies and controls nonpoint source water pollution, emphasizing riparian restoration. You will implement existing water quality clean‑up plans and develop new plans, collaborate with landowners and partners, and decide when to use state regulatory tools to achieve compliance.
What You Will Do
- Plan, lead, organize, and control the work performed by the Watershed Unit, ensuring optimal use of resources and timely completion of assignments.
- Recruit and hire unit staff in accordance with state diversity and civil service rules.
- Timely completion of reports, agreements, plans, publications, recommendations, cleanup projects, and other required products.
- Review documents to ensure consistency with state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
- Prepare unit goals and objectives; coordinate annual planning activities and report on unit accomplishments.
- Maintain effective communication within the agency and across programs.
- Evaluate unit staffing needs, arrange training and professional development, assess staff performance, and recommend corrective actions.
- Manage unit budget and monitor expenditures, approve leave, timesheets, training requests, travel vouchers, and purchasing requests.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 9 years of experience and/or education in a related field:
- Experience or education in environmental, physical, or natural science, engineering, natural resource planning, environmental law, or a closely related field.

- 9 years of experience.
- 8 years of experience plus 30‑59 semester or 45‑89 quarter college credits.
- 7 years of experience plus 60‑89 semester or 90‑134 quarter college credits (Associate’s degree).
- 6 years of experience plus 90‑119 semester or 135‑179 quarter college credits.
- 5 years of experience plus a Bachelor’s degree.
- 3 years of experience plus a Master’s degree or above.
