Archaeologist III Cultural Resources

Hourly Wage: $32.75-$36.85/Regular/Full-Time

The Archaeologist III is responsible for conducting cultural resource investigations and consultation review in accordance with established law. Work involves the use of contemporary methodology and theory to provide protection for archaeological and cultural resources including Traditional cultural Properties. The Archaeologist III utilizes skills and knowledge of the enhancement of the living culture. Archaeologist III assists in the design of field methodology, implementation of fieldwork, and completion of reports, assuring their compliance with applicable state and federal laws and policies.

Archaeologist III may serve as the contact for archaeological and cultural projects and may lead in the field survey for archaeological and cultural investigations during project implementation. Archaeologist III may assist in contract documents and budgets pertaining to archaeological/cultural resources projects. Archaeologist III additional duties includes consultation responses to local, state, federal, correspondence; and attendance at meetings with private, state, federal, and tribal entities.

Examples

of Work Performed
  • Coordinates with city, county, state and federal agencies regarding cultural resources issues, including but not limited to compliance with Executive Order 21-02, Washington State Environmental Protection Act, National Environmental Protection Act, and the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Assists in initiating and preparing contract documents, budgets and scopes of work for outside agencies.
  • Conduct cultural resource inventories by compiling and examining existing institutional databases; professional literature; historical and archival literature; and oral history interviews.
  • Conduct cultural resources projects including archaeological surveys, traditional cultural property studies, and oral history projects.
  • Lead field crews in archaeological survey and field work as needed, operate GPS in-field, draft survey reports that meet or exceed state and federal cultural resources reporting standards, create maps utilizing GIS software.
  • Provide written responses to correspondence from outside agencies and coordinate with various Yakama Nation Programs.
  • Work with the cultural resources team in developing research methodologies that take into account geomorphic processes as they pertain to the cultural landscape.
  • Provide suggestions for the improvement of in-field data collection techniques, based on area of specialization (geomorphology).
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of contemporary archaeological methods and theories, especially as related to the Columbia Basin. Thorough knowledge of geomorphic theory and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of governing state, federal, and tribal laws and policies related to cultural resource management.
  • Thorough knowledge of the state, federal, and tribal laws that govern Traditional Cultural Properties.
  • Thorough knowledge regarding the evaluation of sites under the National Historic Preservation Act, National Register of Historic Places Guidelines.
  • Ability to conduct oral interviews for the purposes of oral history projects and documentation of Traditional Cultural Properties. Understanding of behavior or language that may be considered culturally insensitive.
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography of the Yakama Reservation, Ceded lands and Columbia River Basin.
  • Ability to organize, direct and coordinate simultaneous complex and difficult projects. Knowledge and experience in formulating research design, conducting surveys, and documenting findings.
  • Thorough knowledge of GIS systems software, ability to spatially organize and analyze data.
  • Skill in multitasking and working with interruptions, responding to phone inquiries, coordination with outside agencies.
  • Ability to identify project affect and provide management recommendations to tribal, state/federal government agencies; recommendations for cultural resource treatment/protections.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must possess a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology or related field OR greater than 5 years experience of full-time archaeological work AND actively pursuing higher graduate education leading to a Master's or equivalent degree with combined field experience. Candidate should have a minimum of 1-year specialized experience leading to field survey.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credits of Master's-level education.
  • Familiarity with Yakama Nation Reservation and Ceded Lands.
  • Knowledge of state and federal law governing cultural resources.
  • Must be physically fit and capable of walking and working in tough terrain under adverse conditions.
  • Must be in good professional standing with the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, having no previous violations of federal or state archaeological and cultural resources laws.
