Job Overview

The Retail Clerk assists customers with purchases, manages inventory, and maintains a high level of friendly customer service. This position reports to the Retail Supervisor.

Essential Functions
  • Smile and greet customers entering the gift shop and thank them before they leave.
  • Answer customer questions and provide information on company products, promotions, and policies.
  • Describe merchandise and explain use, operation, and care of merchandise to customers.
  • Recommend, select, and help locate or obtain merchandise based on customer needs and desires.
  • Compute sales prices, total purchases, receive and process cash or credit payment.
  • Issue receipts, refunds, credit, or change due to customers accurately.
  • Maintain responsibility for cash register and contents within.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly cash station area.
  • Stock and maintain sales area with various supplies and products.
  • Maintain neatness and cleanliness of the retail operation by sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, and facing product.
  • Turn in cash drawer and sales reconciliation at shift’s end.
  • Assist with special events.
  • Maintain awareness of safety issues and report them immediately to the manager.
  • Perform other related duties as directed or required.
Skill and Knowledge Requirements
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and attend to guests with the highest standard of customer service.
  • Ability to pass cash handling training.
  • Mathematical skills.
  • National Park gift shop experience preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Move about on foot to accomplish tasks, frequently moving from place to place within the unit.
  • Bend, lift, carry, reach, or extend arms and hands above shoulder height frequently in a constantly changing environment.
  • Lift, carry, and push up to 10 lbs. regularly, 10–15 lbs. frequently, and up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  • Stand for the entire workday.
  • Withstand temperature extremes in indoor/outdoor environments.
  • Read and write work-related documents in English.
  • Use speech recognition and clarity, including understanding speech of customers and co‑workers, and speaking clearly in English.
  • Constantly communicate and receive verbal communication with other employees in a sometimes fast‑paced environment.
  • Be physically present in the unit to perform duties.
