About Prison Facilities

The Washington legislature has established a comprehensive system of corrections to ensure public safety. The Department of Corrections (DOC) operates 11 facilities ranging from minimum to maximum security.

Salary Information

Corrections & Custody Officer 1 (TEAMSTERS Range 45 Step J‑M)

  • Full‑time – $6,046–$6,512 Monthly
  • On‑call/Hourly – $34.75–$37.43

Corrections & Custody Officer 2 (TEAMSTERS Range 48 Step H‑M)

  • Full‑time – $6,200–$7,013 Monthly
  • On‑call/Hourly – $35.63–$40.30
Qualifications for CO2
  • One year of experience as a DOC Corrections and Custody Officer, including completion of the CORE Academy and the Correctional Officer Field Training Program.
  • One year of experience as a Correctional Officer in adult or juvenile corrections where security functions equivalent to DOC Corrections and Security Officer 2 were performed.
On‑call Positions

On‑call staff may work 32–40 hours per week on average, with no minimum hour guarantee. Incumbents must attend six weeks of full‑time paid training immediately upon hire and may be considered for full‑time permanent or temporary vacancies as they arise. Benefits including medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid sick leave, holiday pay, and paid vacation are provided for all correctional officers who work at least 20 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities

Correctional Officers provide safety and security, control, direct, and monitor the activities and movement of inmates, maintain security of the institution, and control movement into, out of, and within the institution in accordance with established department methods and procedures. Officers act as positive role models, use interpersonal skills and good communication to correct criminal thinking while maintaining safe confinement environments, and help inmates become productive members of society.

Overtime is an essential function of this position. Officers must successfully complete the Correctional Worker Core (CWC) academy and receive ongoing on‑the‑job training throughout their employment.

Physical and General Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Legal right to carry a firearm.
  • Pre‑employment drug testing and psychological evaluation.
Health and Safety Requirements
  • Provide valid proof of a baseline tuberculosis skin test within 60 days from the date of hire.
  • Undergo respirator medical evaluation, fit testing, and training as required by WA Industrial Safety and Act standards.
  • Understand use of Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray) and animal care projects, and be aware of potential exposures.
  • Commit to a drug and alcohol‑free work environment and comply with all state and federal laws.
