Perform Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting operations, combat fires, and perform fire prevention, safety and emergency medical duties and perform related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for preventing, combating and extinguishing all types of fires, but primarily aircraft fires.
  • Handle spill incidents resulting from the storage or handling of aviation fuels and lubricants.
  • Maintain and operate all types of Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting and communications equipment.
  • Participate in emergency rescue of aircraft accident victims.
  • Assist in housekeeping and maintenance of the fire station.
  • Survey business establishments and assists tenants in eliminating potential fire hazards.
  • Provide emergency medical services to Airport employees and the public.
  • Participate in fire drills.
  • Attend training courses on firefighting and rescue techniques, fire prevention, first aid, etc.; and maintain proficiency in each in accordance with standards.
  • Participate in activities related to airfield safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
  • High School Graduate
Experience
  • Minimum qualifications include Firefighter I recruit academy training certification or equivalent and four years relevant firefighting experience. A combination of experience and education will be considered.
Skills
  • Individuals must possess ability to learn the airport and its surrounding area, including the layout of runways and taxiways, locations of hydrants, streets, principal buildings, hazardous systems or activities and the quickest and best routes to such areas from the Airport Fire Station; the operation and maintenance of all crash, fire and rescue equipment at SIA and the procedures to be used on certain types of aircraft.
Physical Requirements
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow instructions and the physical strength, agility, coordination and free from uncorrectable physical limitations which would prevent performance of essential duties.
  • Pass a physical examination administered by an Airport selected physician. Freedom from uncorrectable physical limitations which would prevent performance of essential duties.
  • Height and weight commensurate with age.
  • Have 20/30 vision without correction; normal color perception.
  • Must be able to communicate by radio with clarity.
Other Requirements
  • Possess a valid Idaho or Washington State Driver's license.
  • Be certified as a Washington State Emergency Medical Technician.
  • Must meet and maintain neat personal appearance with dress code as specified by Airport management.
  • Be capable of maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates and others.
  • Firefighters employed by Spokane Airports are represented by IAFF Local 29.
  • Selected firefighter must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance. This is a condition of employment with Spokane Airports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Specialized experience in Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting operations, including graduation from a basic Fire Protection Specialist Course of the military or equivalent civilian crash-fire-rescue training highly preferred.
Security and Safety
  • Subject to a ten (10) year background check for security clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Airport security badge as a condition of employment.
  • This is a safety sensitive position.

  • Co-workers, Airport staff, tenants and public.
Working Conditions, Travel, Environment and Potential Hazards
  • Routine:
    Office, equipment bays, heavy firefighting and rescue vehicles, exposure to loud equipment and jet noise.
  • Emergency:
    Aircraft crash, fire (structural, airfield and aircraft), EMS
  • Schedule:

    The shift time will be as directed by the Chief of the Department. Firefighters are subject to recall for all major fires or accidents.
Equipment Operation Required
  • Personal protective equipment including SCBA and clothing.
  • Medical equipment.
  • All fire and rescue tools and equipment (fire/rescue vehicles, pumps, nozzles, hoses, ladders, hand tools, hydraulic tools, etc.).
