This is skilled journey level mechanical, diagnostic, and repair work on gasoline and/or diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Work consists of journey level welding which includes the ability to do moderate machine work and repairs; replacing tires; and performing front end alignments; and other related maintenance and repair work on Detention's vehicles and/or specialty and heavy equipment.

* Job Description:

** Essential Job Functions (Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:)
* Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs equipment and machinery; prepares orders lists; records materials used, time spent, and repairs made.
* Overhauls and repairs gasoline and diesel engines, differentials, drive trains, transmissions, brakes, hydraulics, air conditioning, and other systems.
* Diagnoses malfunctions in electrical systems and performs required repairs.
* Performs body and fender work, including metal and fiberglass repair and automotive and machinery painting.
* Operates a forklift and hoists, loads and unloads a semi-tractor with a low-boy trailer and wrecker boom attachment; operates tow trucks and other equipment (loading may require the use of a winch or other applicable equipment).
* Performs all types of arc and oxyacetylene welding, including stick and wire feed on all types of metals.
* Maintains, diagnoses/repairs over 100 pieces of commercial grade small engine lawn equipment to include:  weed eaters, blowers, mowers (push/riding) and chain saws, etc.
* Performs safe and effective repairs and welding techniques on all types of light, specialty, and heavy equipment, both in a shop and/or in a field environment.
* Utilizes blue prints, plans, and sketches.
* Layouts and fabricates all types of structures and equipment.
* Fabricates and installs various wear parts on vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
* Maintains, cleans and services, renovates, and fuels vehicles and ensures that vehicles are operational.
* Maintains vehicle and stock control inventory for Detention's Motor Pool operations and computer cards and fueling systems.
* Maintains, repairs and replaces tires ensuring proper size code, tread design, etc.
* Determines if replacement or repair is necessary, sends out tires for recapping or sectioning.
* Orders and maintains adequate and proper inventory supplies.
* Trains and/or may supervise employees and/or inmates in the repair of vehicles, machinery, and equipment and the proper use of shop tools and equipment.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

TRAINING AND

EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent
-and- five (5) years of related mechanical experience in the repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment which includes at least one (1) year of experience with tire repair, balancing and front end alignment work;plus, four (4) years of related welding/machinist experience.
LICENSE:  Completion of a recognized mechanics apprenticeship program (ASE certification preferred)
