Position: CARPENTER - SWING SHIFT @ FACILITIES, 40 HRS PER WEEK, CONT.

Provide a service of installation, repair, and maintenance of carpentry requirements throughout the district facilities for the purpose of providing a safe environment for students, staff, and patrons of Spokane Public Schools. Assist other trades in the carpentry department when needed.

SALARY: LEVEL 2 on the Unified Trades Salary Schedule. For external applicants, experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public and private school district.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Repair, maintain, or alter buildings and other structures from plans, sketches, and/or instructions.
  • Repair, maintain, alter, or install partitions, floors, walls, ceilings, screens, windows, sashes, doors, stairs, cupboards, roofs, and other related carpentry work.
  • Repair, maintain, alter, or install lockers, cabinets, furniture, and other related fixtures.
  • Install, work from and remove scaffolding, stages, planks, ladders, jacks, and other work platforms.
  • Use and maintain hand and power tools such as drills, wood chisels, sanders, metal grinders, saws, routers, planer, etc.; operate drill presses, grinders and other tools required for accomplishing work.
  • Utilize computers and other communication devices.
  • Observe safety rules and regulations.
  • Know the use of all related hazardous materials required to perform work.
  • Follow district procurement card and purchasing policy.
  • Perform related duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Secondary Responsibilities
  • Assist other trades in the carpenter department as needed or assigned (furniture repair, locksmith, floor layer, glazier).
  • Operate snow removal equipment and plow routes or areas as assigned.
  • Repair and maintain play structures.
  • Mental Demands

    Experiences multiple demands and multi-tasking. Requires concentration and attention to detail.

    Physical Demands

    Requires prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, crawling and other physical exertion; required to work on ladders and roofs; requires safety awareness on construction, repair and emergency sites; may be requested to work during off‑hours for emergencies; exposed to high noise levels from machines; may be exposed to potentially dangerous conditions; required to wear protective gear; required to work outdoors in inclement weather;

    required to lift and carry heavy supplies, materials, and equipment up to fifty (50) pounds; required to drive between sites.

    Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed above.
  • Journeyman carpenter having completed recognized apprenticeship program or equivalent required. Five years similar work experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all types of carpentry construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to construct cabinetry.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide and maintain assignment logs and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to use computer systems and other communication devices.
  • Ability to review plans, specifications, shop drawings, and submittals to determine applicability to existing district standards for materials and equipment. Resolve problems and provide technical expertise.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner, following safety procedures.
