Mechanic

Provide maintenance and repair of all gasoline and diesel engines or equipment including, but not limited to, automobiles, trucks, forklifts, generators, pumps, and small engine air cooled power type mechanical equipment throughout the district facilities for the purpose of providing a safe environment for students, staff, and patrons of Spokane Public Schools. Assist other crafts in the Mechanics, Welder, and Support Operator trades when needed.

Salary: LEVEL 1 on the Unified Trades Salary Schedule. For external applicants, experience increments depend on experience in the same or similar permanent position within a Washington State public and private school district.  to view current salary schedule for this position.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Maintain fleet vehicles and repair gasoline and diesel engine on equipment such as graders, trucks, cranes, forklifts, sweepers, tractors, automobiles, portable generators, pumps and similar. Replace or repair brake shoes, brake cylinders, repair tires, and vehicle electrical systems.

2. Perform service on engine equipment such as tune-ups. Maintain and repair small engine air cooled power equipment such as small tractors, mowers, snow blowers, trimmers, edgers, and similar.

3. Perform sharpening and setting up of mowers, chain saws, edgers, and similar.

4. Perform routine maintenance including fuel and exhaust system service, oil changes, as well as tune-ups, replace spark plugs, and similar.

5. Use computerized diagnostic tools to diagnose problems.

6. Utilize computers and other communication devices.

7. Comply with safety rules and regulations.

8. Know how to use all related hazardous materials required to perform work.

9. Follow district procurement card and purchasing policy.

10. Perform related duties as requested by supervisor.

Secondary Responsibilities

1. Assist other crafts in the Mechanics Shop; including welder, mechanic, building mechanic, and support operators.

2. Provide snow removal support as needed.

Qualifications

1. Completion of recognized apprenticeship as an automotive mechanic or have a full journeyman status preferred.

2. Proven experience as a fleet mechanic preferred.

3. Valid Certificate (ASE) preferred.

4. Five years commercial experience preferred.

5. Familiar with all types of automotive mechanical equipment

6. Ability to work in a safe manner, following safety procedures.

7. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required.

8. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background.

9. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.

10. Demonstrated ability to perform service and repair work on all types of engines, large and small, gasoline or diesel, and related equipment.

11. Demonstrated ability to sharpen and set up mowers, chain saws, edgers, and similar.

12. Demonstrated ability to maintain assignment logs and reports.

13. Demonstrated ability to use computer systems, diagnostic and other communication devices.

14. Demonstrated ability to work at various heights from ladders and scaffolds. Physical ability to lift 50 pounds.
