Overview
Glacier Fish Company is dedicated to producing the highest quality frozen-at-sea groundfish products in the world. We are one of the largest producers of frozen at sea cod and pollock and distribute seafood throughout the world. We manage two trawl catcher-processor vessels that operate in the Bering Sea and off the coast of Washington and Oregon.
Responsibilities- Navigate and maneuver the vessel safely using navigational charts, standard aids, and electronic bridge equipment, including plotters, radar, radios, depth finders and sonars.
- Ensure compliance with COLREGS and Coast Guard Commercial Fishing Vessel requirements.
- Direct fishing operations, managing fishing grounds, workload capacities, and maintaining fishing plans while managing bycatch and quotas.
- Record daily activities in the ship’s log.
- Coordinate and communicate with all department heads to ensure efficient operation and achievement of vessel production goals.
- Implement and support all company safety and environmental policies and procedures in accordance with the Safety Management System.
- Supervise all medical and safety activities on board, either directly or by delegating to other ship officers.
- Oversee all regulatory logs, safety records, required drills and trainings, and maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
- Prepare the vessel for USCG/DNV inspections.
- Work 12 hours per day, 7 days a week in all weather conditions; each trip averages 13–20 days.
- Climb and exit the vessel without assistance by using a gangway or Jacob’s ladder and descend steep stairs and vertical ladders.
- Be able to remain away from land-based medical attention for up to 3 months and share confined spaces with crew.
- Coast Guard License or Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license: 1600 GT on the Northern Glacier.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as Captain or Mate on H&G vessels in Alaskan waters.
- Knowledge of fishing grounds, COLREGS, and Coast Guard Commercial Fishing Vessel requirements.
- Strong leadership and communication skills in English.
- Physical ability to perform tasks described in responsibilities.
- Pay is crew‑share based/percentage of catch, varying by fishery, time of year, trip length, and quotas.
