WSDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker positions for the winter maintenance season in South Central Region, Area 2.

Vacancies are available in Randle (White Pass), East Selah (Yakima), Rimrock (Naches), and Toppenish. Positions located in Randle are eligible for 10% increased pay pursuant to the current collective bargaining agreement between Washington Federation of State Employees and WSDOT. Positions in White Pass will begin work early to mid-October, and positions in the other locations are expected to begin work in early to mid-November.

The successful candidates will help keep Washington’s highways safe and open by performing snow and ice removal, repairing guardrail and signs, patching potholes, clearing brush and trees, maintaining drainage systems, and providing traffic control to protect both the traveling public and work crews. Working under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 and the supervision of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor, these positions play a vital role in supporting the safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and services.

WSDOT maintenance personnel are expected to respond quickly to clear highways of hazards to ensure the public has safe and seamless access to travel. This position may also work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water, traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends, nights, and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will:

• Perform highway maintenance activities in outdoor environments under varying weather, terrain, and traffic conditions, including work at heights, in confined spaces, and around hazardous materials while following established safety practices.
• Operate and maintain a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment, including Class A, B, and C equipment, snow and ice response vehicles, excavators, loaders, graders, cranes, paving equipment, sweepers, Vactors, and attenuator trucks.
• Safely use and maintain hand tools, power tools, chemical application equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to support maintenance and repair operations.
• Support year-round and emergency maintenance operations, including snow and ice response, by working varying schedules, weekends, nights, holidays, and other operationally required shifts.
• Travel throughout the assigned maintenance area, and occasionally beyond, to perform maintenance activities, attend meetings, training, and support emergency operations in challenging weather and road conditions.
• Utilize computerized equipment controls, mobile devices, and computer systems to support maintenance operations and complete required documentation.
• Coordinate and communicate effectively with supervisors, maintenance staff, contractors, law enforcement, public agencies, and the traveling public to safely and efficiently complete work activities.
• Safely perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, stooping, standing, and walking on uneven terrain while handling materials and equipment.

• Highway and Roadway Maintenance: Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure, including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, debris removal, and repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
• Heavy Equipment Operations: Demonstrated skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment, including front-end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck-mounted attenuators, backhoes, Vactors, and 32, GVW dump trucks equipped with snowplows and chemical deicer attachments.
