Role Description

The School Nurse is a full-time, on-site role located in Spring Hill, KS. This position provides direct health services to students and staff, including assessment of health concerns, first aid, emergency care, and management of chronic conditions in accordance with district policies and state regulations. The School Nurse maintains student health records, administers medications, monitors immunization compliance, and coordinates care plans with families, healthcare providers, and school staff.

Daily responsibilities also include promoting health education, supporting infection prevention, participating in individualized education program (IEP) or 504 plan meetings when needed, and contributing to a safe and healthy school environment.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skills in School Nursing and School Health, including managing student health needs within an educational setting.
  • Strong Nursing and Medicine knowledge applicable to primary and preventive care in school environments.
  • Experience or training in Pediatrics, including assessment and care of infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Current registered nurse (RN) license in the state of Kansas; school nurse or related certification preferred.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in medical emergencies and to follow established protocols.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills with students, families, educators, and healthcare providers.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, equity, and inclusive practices in serving diverse student populations.
  • Previous experience in school, community health, or pediatric nursing is beneficial.
Essential Functions
  • Provide essential healthcare for students and emergency health care services for parents, and employees of the district.
  • Conduct student health appraisals, including:
    • Medical examinations.
    • Vision screenings.
    • Hearing screenings.
    • Weighing and measuring.
  • Follow-up of problems noted.
  • Consultation with teachers and parents regarding health problems.
  • Coordinate a program of communicable disease control based on Kansas immunization laws, to include:
    • Maintaining immunization records for each student.
    • Communicating with parents regarding immunization requirements.
  • Provide triage and a program of caring for students who are injured or who become ill at school.
  • Provide faculty and staff with first-aid training and supplies.
  • Assist in providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness of pupils until parents or emergency personnel assume responsibility.
  • Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured.
  • Coordinate and supervise a program of dental health education.
  • Encourage parents to provide their children with annual dental check-ups.
  • Request assistance for children in need of health or dental services.
  • Coordinate and supervise a program of health education
  • Encourage periodic health examinations for all children.
  • Confer with parents and community agencies concerning the health of children.
  • Assist in planning the health curriculum and instructional materials.
  • Assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Assist in referral and planning programs for exceptional children.
  • Counsel with teachers, students, and parents concerning children's individual health problems.
  • Maintain a cumulative health folder for each student, recording all data pertinent to the child's health.
  • Submit accurate and timely reports as required by various health agencies.
  • Immediately report to the Principal any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment.
  • Order and maintain all supplies for the health service program.
  • Assist with enrollment procedures.
  • Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff.
