Brief Summary of the job.
Under the supervision of the Police Sergeant, the Police Officer is a non‑exempt position under FLSA which safeguards and serves the citizens of Spring Hill. This position provides citizen assistance, enforces all federal, state, and local laws, and performs patrol duties. Making arrests, issuing citations for traffic violations, and investigating crimes and accidents are the primary responsibilities of the position. Collateral duties may include, but are not limited to;
Field Training Officer, Coordinator of programs, K9 and/or Department Trainer. Police Officer at Step 2 and above may be eligible for consideration as a department investigator. The employee should possess excellent communication and public relations skills. The position requires a valid Kansas driver’s license.
Essential Duties of the job.
- Apply department orders, rules and regulations to police situations; understand and apply legal standards.
- Operate patrol/unmarked vehicle in a safe and effective manner; inspect vehicle for safe and efficient operating condition, perform minor vehicle repairs as necessary; fuel and clean vehicle.
- Perform general patrol duties.
- May involve public information officer duties and managing police social media accounts.
- Apply for search warrants, conduct follow up on criminal reports.
- React quickly to danger and adapt to different people, behaviors, and circumstances.
- Perform crime prevention and public relations duties; establish rapport with the community.
- Respond to medical emergencies; perform basic first aid and administer CPR.
- Apprehend, charge, process, and transport suspects.
- Perform traffic enforcement and stops; issue citations; investigate sources of odor to include alcohol and drugs.
- Perform accident investigations and direct traffic.
- Perform oral interrogations and interviewing duties.
- Meet with prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, detectives from other agencies in case resolution and filing, court preparation and testimony. Package evidence; review and investigate case reports for charging and/or court preparation; comprehend laws and abstract concepts.
- Report writing duties. Thoroughly complete offense, arrest, investigative, information, accident, evidence reports.
- Work days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required. Be available for call outs, which may include response to crime scenes, shift coverage, and city‑wide emergencies.
