Position: Street/Parks Maintenance Worker I

Section I:
Brief Summary of the Job

Under the supervision of the Street/Parks Supervisor, Maintenance Worker I is a non-exempt position under FLSA which performs manual labor for the department. This employee completes a variety of service, construction and/or maintenance tasks which result in or contribute to the comfort, convenience, health, or safety of all citizens. The work involves constructing or maintaining streets, alleyways, sidewalks, and similar areas;

maintaining medians and rights of way; mowing, trimming and edging of streets; and maintaining the City park system to include mowing, trimming, trash collection, debris removal, landscaping or completing equipment maintenance related to streets and park functions. Other duties include related tasks which contribute to the upkeep and care of buildings, facilities, grounds, streets, alleys or utility services, or other municipal properties (when applicable).

This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, effective communication and public‑relation skills.

Section II:
Essential Duties of the Job
  • Repair, maintain, and construct streets, alleys and sidewalks, culverts, storm sewers, catch basins, headwalls.
  • Conduct traffic safety by directing flow, using traffic cones and barricades.
  • Maintain drivable streets by sweeping, removing debris, grading, patching and ensuring proper drainage.
  • Perform maintenance work in the City park system: mowing, trimming, trash collection, tree trimming, debris removal, seeding, fertilizing, landscaping, playground equipment, sidewalks, ditches and roads in and around parks.
  • Perform maintenance work on buildings and structures.
  • Install and maintain street signs.
  • Maintain and operate department equipment, trucks, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, fertilizers, snow plows, asphalt roller, backhoe, skid loader, dump trucks, crack seal machine, paint striper and other equipment.
  • Assist in snow and ice removal during inclement weather.
  • Assist other departments as assigned.
  • May be subject to overtime and call‑back.
  • Follow department safety procedures and practices along with department policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or deemed necessary.
Section III:
Education, Formal Training and/or Certifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and Class B CDL or the ability to obtain such within 6 months of employment.
  • Maintain Flagger certification.
  • NIMS training as designated.

Preferred Education:

Technical training in equipment operations.

Section IV:
Experience

One month similar or related experience.

Preferred Experience:

One year of similar or related experience.

Special Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

A working knowledge of equipment maintenance and repairs, welding, mechanics, plumbing, and mathematics is required. This employee should be able to operate dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, salt and sand spreaders, unloaders, pumps, motors, power tools, hand tools and other department equipment. The ability to understand and anticipate problems, to follow department policies, and to interpret written instructions, blueprints, schematics and manuals is required.

This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude and effective public‑relation, oral and written communication skills.

Problem Solving:
Limited independent problem solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters problems with citizen complaints, equipment malfunctions, and traffic. Serious problems are reported to the Street/Parks Supervisor or Public Works Director.

Decision Making:
Limited independent decision making is involved in this position. This employee makes decisions about performing necessary repairs and performing daily duties in the safest and most efficient manner.

Supervision:
This employee works with supervision from the Street/Parks Supervisor and occasional supervision from the Public Works Director, but does not have supervisory responsibilities over subordinate personnel.

Financial Accountability:
This employee is responsible for the safe operation of department equipment, but does not participate in the annual budget process.
