Section I:
Brief Summary of the Job

This seasonal position is responsible for the first‑line supervision and training of lifeguards at the City’s Aquatic Center Facility in coordination with the Assistant Supervisor and, if no Assistant Supervisor is available, taking an active role in ensuring safety protocols are followed. The Head Lifeguard may assist the Assistant Supervisor in conducting maintenance checks, maintaining accurate records, and performing lifeguard duties such as monitoring activities at a City‑operated swimming pool, maintaining order, preventing accidents, and rescuing swimmers in distress.

Essential Duties of the Job
  • Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary.
  • Ensures that swimmers are well supervised in the pool and on decks.
  • Participates in and provides supervision of Lifeguards as well as monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents.
  • Orients new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities.
  • Assists in scheduling, coordinating and conducting in‑service training.
  • Ensures that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques.
  • Ensures that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies.
  • Keeps the management well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs.
  • Inventories and recognizes when supplies or equipment need to be ordered and communicates the needs to management.
  • Interfaces with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues, providing input and feedback while responding to problems.
  • Ensures that aquatic programs are occurring as desired and assists with the overall management of swimming lessons and pool parties.
  • If qualified, provides swimming instruction as needed and/or scheduled.
  • Reports safety incidents to the Assistant Supervisor and/or Facility Supervisor.
  • Exhibits a high degree of customer service skills and a positive attitude with staff and customers at all times, creating and maintaining good public relations.
Marginal Functions
  • Obey and comply with all City ordinances and policies.
  • Assist other departments and perform other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
  • Works as a lifeguard, admissions or concessions staff as needed or required.
  • Performs minor maintenance on equipment or notifies maintenance personnel of emergencies and equipment failures.
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

Duties, responsibilities, scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Section III:
Education, Formal Training and/or Certifications Required

Having already obtained or being currently working on a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Must be able to read, write and count. Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications are required or must be able to obtain prior to employment date.

Preferred Education: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor and/or Waterpark Instructor certifications, WSI, and Blood Borne Pathogens certification are preferred. A CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) certification is preferred.

Section IV:
Experience

One year of lifeguard experience required; swim lesson instruction desired. Must be at least 16 years of age.

Skills and Abilities

Must be able to perform lifesaving techniques and skills in emergency situations and in training. Must be able to recognize, instruct and monitor and evaluate daily operations, employee skills and techniques and facility protocols. Working knowledge of mathematics and chemical use. Ability to establish successful working relationships and use good professional judgement, honesty and integrity in decision‑making. Knowledge of how to handle personnel issues.
