Teacher Assistant – Cumberland County Schools
Starting Date: Aug 12, 2026
Position: Teacher Assistant (Non‑Exempt)
Qualifications:
- College transcript showing a completed degree.
- College transcript showing at least 48 college‑level courses completed (remedial/pre‑requisite courses excluded).
- College transcript showing at least 24 college‑level courses completed plus a Work Keys assessment with passing scores:
Workplace Documents (score ≥
4), Business Writing (score ≥
3), Applied Mathematics (score ≥
4). - Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and be able to drive a school bus when called upon.
- Working knowledge of effective methods for working with children; ability to solve minor problems and follow detailed written and oral instructions.
Reports To: Principal and Assigned Teacher(s)
Job Goal: Support the teacher in the teaching‑learning process for students.
Responsibilities- Academic Assistance: Provide group and individualized instruction; demonstrate instructional activities; check and correct student work while in progress; keep students on task; praise and reinforce achievement; report student progress to the teacher.
- Instructional Preparation/Support: Arrange classroom furnishings and equipment; prepare visual aids and duplicate materials; reorganize materials at the end of day; serve as proctor during testing; score papers as instructed; distribute and collect instructional materials; attend workshops.
- Report and Records: Check and report attendance; enter data into health records; record student behavior and file data according to regulatory requirements.
- Monitoring Student Behavior: Supervise students in the classroom and in other locations; create and distribute awards for positive behavior; promote self‑esteem, citizenship, social skills, and respect for others; reconcile minor conflicts; participate in discipline policy development; discipline misbehavior through approved methods; report discipline problems to the teacher or principal; report significant changes or lack of progress in student behavior.
- Bus Operation: Obtain and maintain a CDL; complete pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections; drive the bus while maintaining proficiency; maintain the bus route schedule; report delays and accidents; keep the interior of the bus clean; discharge students only at authorized stops and transport only authorized students; comply with local and state traffic regulations.
Obtain a CDL; communicate orally and in writing with parents, staff, and community leaders; possess finger dexterity; perform basic life functions such as kneeling, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, reaching; lift, push, pull; talk, see, hear; and perform repetitive motions.
Special Requirements- Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
- Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) when requested for bus driving duties.
