PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

The Elementary School Teacher is responsible for implementing the District’s instructional program and educational philosophy in the subject area or grade level designated in accordance with District goals, policies and procedures. The Elementary School/Middle School Teacher collaborates with other members of the school community in their efforts to prepare students to increase their academic performance to meet state standards.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited College or University
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned
  • At least one year of student teaching or approved internship
  • Reading Certification for teachers applying to teach K-3 students or currently enrolled

Preferred:

  • Five years of successful classroom experience
  • Reading Certification for teachers applying to teach Pre-k, Grade 4, and Grade 5
Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Knowledge of subjects assigned
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Teaches in accordance with staff assignment.
  • Displays effective teaching practices, including completing effective lesson plans with immediate and long-range goals, developing lessons appropriately, using time effectively, choosing appropriate materials and activities, presenting subject matter clearly and interestingly, coordinating and planning with team members, and planning with the librarian for an effective library experience.
  • Administers the classroom to create an environment conducive to learning, organizing procedures for effective classroom management, organizing the assigned area efficiently, providing flexibility for individual and group activities, practicing positive discipline techniques, maintaining a positive, accepting attitude with students.
  • Cooperates with school personnel in providing for student welfare: supervising behavior and safety of students in classes and during activities, working with counselors, administrators, parents and other staff to place students in the most effective educational setting, instructing students in school safety and emergency drill procedures, participating in special activities and programs.
  • Initiates communications with parents: informs parents about programs, alerts parents when problems arise, keeps parents informed about student progress.
  • Cooperates with appropriate program director, department chair, and all other school personnel.
  • Administers an appropriate record‑keeping system: maintains accurate records for student evaluation, progress, attendance, textbooks, materials, funds, parent contacts, conferences, disciplinary measures, referrals, and meets required record‑keeping format and timelines.
  • Exemplifies professionalism in behavior and performance; cooperates with staff and administrators, working with team leaders and principals to improve, promotes understanding of district programs and policies, remains current in education, and adheres to the Texas Education Code of Ethics and supports the district’s philosophy.
  • Reports to work daily per schedule approved by campus principal.
  • Performs other appropriate duties as assigned.
Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment.
