Status: Exempt – Full-Time
Primary PurposeThe Special Education Co-Teacher is responsible for the instruction of eligible handicapped students as assigned by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee within the special education program and curriculum guidelines.
All employees are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate clearly and respectfully, champion student needs, and drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements.
- Preferred: Minimum of one-year student teaching and approved internship.
- Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area.
- Knowledge of AD and IEP goal setting process and implementation.
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Implement instructional program; utilize knowledge of learning styles and modalities; correlate IEP with regular education curriculum guides; requisition materials, equipment, supplies.
- Serve as a member of the ARD/IEP Committee; administer criterion-referenced testing; recommend appropriate goals and objectives; participate in placement decisions.
- Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for students included in the general education classroom; establish new objectives; redesign curriculum; suggest alternative teaching methods; co-teach or provide in-class support for appropriate subjects.
- Assess relation between student performance and disabling condition; provide remedial or tutorial assistance.
- Utilize special education staff; coordinate input; request and coordinate district special services; establish frequent communication with families.
- Maintain confidential records of assigned students; complete end-of-year reports and evaluations.
- Fulfill campus duties as assigned, meeting the program needs of special education children.
- Compile with the position description of the regular classroom teacher as applies to co-teaching situations.
- Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal.
Maintain emotional control under stress; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment; may be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; assist non-ambulatory students; exposure to biological hazards.
