Position: Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, The Woodlands

Job Summary

Position is responsible for providing therapeutic recreation services to rehabilitation patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Licensed Therapeutic Recreation Specialist.
  • Primary coverage for inpatients on a 29‑bed inpatient rehab unit.
  • Perform recreation co‑treats with PT, OT, and SLP.
  • Lead community recreation outings into the community with patients and a PT or OT.
  • Train to drive the van and maintain it in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Schedule and coordinate the animal‑assisted therapy program and visits with the facility dog handler.
  • Work closely with the music therapist to coordinate events, co‑treats, and activities for patients.
Principal Accountabilities
  • Deliver appropriate therapy at a competent level according to patient needs and age.
  • Perform initial evaluation of patients to determine appropriate plan, plan recreational activities, and arrange necessary space, materials, and transportation.
  • Maintain required departmental records, including written evaluations, weekly progress notes, participation logs, and community resource listings.
  • Present relevant special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, or university settings as requested.
  • Ensure safe care for patients, staff, and visitors while adhering to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications and time management expectations.
  • Promote individual professional growth and development through mandatory/continuing education and competency requirements; support department goals and mentor less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrate commitment to caring for every member of the community by providing compassionate and personalized experiences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Administration, or related field.
  • Certification with the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
