A Welder Helper is responsible for assisting the weld shop in the setup and execution of welding activities. This includes but not limited to data logging, setup assistance, material handling, grinding and miscellaneous shop activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Read, understand and execute written instructions (i.e. production orders, trace sheets)
  • Read, understand and work to Welding Procedure Specifications.
  • Assist in the setup of GMAW/FCAW semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Assist in the set up and trouble shoot mechanized GTAW equipment and SAW equipment.
  • Grinds and conditions weld areas and weld prep areas using wire brush, portable grinder, hand scraper, etc.
  • Use a tape measure to accurately measure part dimensions.
  • Use steel squares to assist in the align and fit connectors or fittings to pipe.
  • Use temperature indicating crayons and contact pyrometer to determine part temperature.
  • Complete electronic data logging, monitor and communicate parameters with welder during welding.
  • Operate overhead bridge cranes and jib cranes to safely move parts.
  • Operate a forklift to safely move palletized and loose parts work with outside departments on technical projects and special cases to meet company goals and needs.
  • Assist with material movement/shipping/receiving as needed or determined by workload.
Required

Skills and Experience:
  • Required:High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Preferred: Minimum 1 year experience working in a shop.
  • Preferred:Forklift and crane experience.
  • Able to perform tasks with limited supervision; able understand what they have been instructed to do.
  • Good communication skills; capable of instructing and training other welders or welding operators.
  • Training on safety, welding procedures, drawings, shop routers or work instructions as needed.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and work flexible hours.
  • Understanding of weld procedures

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

    Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • This position requires an onsite presence to perform the essential duties.
Work Environment/Conditions
  • This position will require working primarily indoors in a smoke-free office and manufacturing facility but may also require the employee to be outdoors on occasion.
  • The noise level is usually moderate. Employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
  • All welders work either in the Pipe or Fabrication shop at the Spring facility or on other customer field work sites. This work is performed primarily from the standing position but may require the welder to bend at the waist and or knees, lie on his back or side or work from the sitting position while looking up or down. Workstations may be located on production pieces such as skids or inside vessels.
