Job Description
The Wellsite Geologist is responsible for interpreting and integrating geological data to provide geological support for drilling operations and field development activities. This role supports well planning, geosteering, formation evaluation, geological monitoring, and data acquisition throughout the drilling process. The Wellsite Geologist works closely with drilling, reservoir, geoscience, and operations teams to optimize well placement, ensure data quality, and support reservoir characterization efforts.
In addition to providing technical expertise, the Wellsite Geologist oversees geological service providers, ensures the accuracy of geological reporting, and contributes to field development planning and reservoir studies. The role may also involve mentoring junior geoscience personnel and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
Geological Operations Support
- Interpret geological, petrophysical, and drilling data to support safe and efficient well execution.
- Provide real-time geological monitoring and formation evaluation during drilling operations.
- Support horizontal and directional well placement through geosteering and geological interpretation.
- Generate and maintain geological cross-sections, maps, formation evaluation logs, and other subsurface deliverables.
- Prepare and distribute final well reports and post-drill geological evaluations.
- Support reservoir characterization, field development planning, and multidisciplinary subsurface studies.
- Supervise and coordinate geological service providers and wellsite geological operations.
- Monitor and oversee geological data acquisition activities, including:
- Mud logging operations
- Logging While Drilling (LWD) services
- Wireline logging operations
- Coring and sample acquisition programs
- Ensure quality assurance and quality control of geological data, reports, and interpretations.
- Audit geological services and data acquisition activities when required.
- Serve as the primary technical contact for geological service providers and contractors.
- Review, validate, and manage geological deliverables and supporting documentation.
- Participate in pre-drill planning activities and operational readiness reviews.
- Coordinate geological data acquisition programs and ensure alignment with project objectives.
- Communicate geological findings and operational updates to stakeholders through meetings, reports, and presentations.
- Coordinate the collection, shipment, storage, and documentation of geological samples, cores, and related materials.
- Support special studies, technical projects, and post-drill evaluations.
- Monitor geological indicators related to formation pressure and drilling hazards.
- Support abnormal pressure surveillance activities through data analysis and interpretation.
- Maintain pressure evaluation records and communicate findings to drilling and operations teams.
- Prepare detailed reports documenting observations, interpretations, and operational recommendations.
- Mentor and support the development of junior geologists and geological personnel.
- Promote best practices in geological operations, data management, and reporting.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational performance and data quality.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geoscience, Earth Science, or a related discipline.
- Experience as a Wellsite Geologist supporting drilling and geological operations.
- Strong understanding of geological interpretation, formation evaluation, and subsurface data integration.
- Experience with geological monitoring and real-time drilling support.
- Knowledge of directional drilling, well planning, depth control, and drilling operations.
- Experience working with mud logging, wireline logging, Logging While Drilling (LWD), and geological data acquisition programs.
- Experience with core acquisition, handling, processing, and interpretation.
- Ability to analyze geological data and provide recommendations to support drilling and development decisions.
- Strong technical writing, reporting, and documentation skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and coordination skills.
- Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and operational environments.
- Commitment to health, safety, environmental, and operational excellence standards.
- Ability to work in physically demanding field environments and comply with applicable safety requirements.
- Experience supporting offshore, onshore, directional, or horizontal drilling operations.
- Familiarity with geosteering and real-time well placement techniques.
- Knowledge of abnormal pressure detection and pressure evaluation methods.
- Experience with geological mapping, cross-section generation, and reservoir characterization.
