OverviewThe Middle School Student Support Teacher will work closely with students, teachers, and the intervention team to provide academic assistance and behavioral support in a positive and constructive environment. This role is designed to help middle school students achieve their full academic potential, improve their behavior and social skills, and navigate the challenges of middle school life, while supporting teachers in maintaining a productive classroom environment.
EssentialFunctions, Tasks, and Responsibilities
- Academic Support
- Assist small groups with academic support.
- Provide one-on-one support to students who require additional help in understanding lessons, completing assignments, or improving organizational skills.
- Assist in the implementation of differentiated instruction strategies under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Proctor tests in small group or one-on-one settings, as indicated.
- Help monitor and track student progress in collaboration with teachers and the intervention team.
- Behavioral Support
- Support students in managing their behavior in the classroom and other school settings.
- Implement individualized behavior plans as designed by the intervention team or teachers.
- Provide proactive strategies to prevent disruptive behavior and encourage positive social interactions.
- Monitor and assist students who may need emotional or social support, particularly those with behavioral challenges or specific learning needs.
- Work with students to improve self-regulation skills and conflict resolution strategies, under the direction of the intervention team.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and support staff to identify and address student needs.
- Maintain open communication with teachers regarding student progress, both academically and behaviorally.
- Participate in SSP meetings, helping to provide input on student needs and potential strategies for support.
- Supervision and Monitoring
- Provide supervision during non-academic periods, such as lunch, recess, and transitions, ensuring students’ safety and positive behavior.
- Monitor and guide students in ensuring that school rules and procedures are followed in all school environments.
- Documentation and Reporting:
Keep accurate records of student progress, behavior incidents, and academic support provided, under the guidance of the intervention team. - Report observations of student needs or concerns to the appropriate school staff or intervention team.

- 4-year degree from a college, university, or Bible school.
- Able to pass a background check.
- Able to move around the school building and assist with classroom or other school activities.
- May require standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods.
- Able to supervise students during outdoor recess in various weather conditions, including the heat and cold.
- Experience working with middle school students, especially in academic support and behavior management.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Able to work effectively with students, teachers, and staff.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm and supportive in challenging situations.
- An understanding of positive behavioral management techniques and academic intervention strategies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional ethics.
- Previous experience in a classroom setting.
- Relevant certifications or training in education, adolescent development, or special education.
