Overview

The Elective Cooking Teacher plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality, Christ-centered education to students, focusing on Elective subjects. They are responsible for designing and implementing engaging, biblically-integrated lesson plans, assessing student progress, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment, and ensuring the well-being of students.

Essential Functions, Tasks, and Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute well-structured, Biblically-integrated cooking lesson plans that teach fundamental culinary skills and kitchen safety.
  • Introduce age-appropriate cooking techniques, nutrition concepts, and food stewardship principles to students in grades 3–8.
  • Prepare ingredients, equipment, and workstations prior to each class to ensure smooth and safe instruction.
  • Teach and model proper food handling, hygiene practices, and safe use of kitchen tools and appliances.
  • Adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles, needs, and abilities of students.
  • Utilize technology, demonstrations, and hands‑on activities to enhance the cooking and learning experience.
  • Foster a positive and inviting kitchen classroom atmosphere, promoting respect, teamwork, and engagement among students.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment by managing the classroom, monitoring equipment use, and implementing CHESS policies.
  • Supervise students closely during cooking activities to ensure safety, especially when using heat, sharp tools, or specialized equipment.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, report any incidents, and follow established procedures for student safety and documentation.
  • Assist students with questions, cooking techniques, and recipe steps to facilitate skill development and understanding.
  • Uphold and promote the school’s policies, procedures, and academic standards.
  • Provide supervision of students during indoor or outdoor recess and/or lunch activities, ensuring their safety and adherence to school rules.
  • Assist in the orderly dismissal of students, as needed, maintaining a secure and organized transition from the classroom to car line.
  • Be punctual and reliable, arriving on time for assigned classes and adhering to the school’s schedule.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability when facing unforeseen challenges or changes in lesson plans, ingredient availability, or equipment needs.
  • Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor when interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Continuously improve one’s culinary and teaching skills and stay updated on educational trends, kitchen safety practices, and best instructional methods.
  • Participate in professional development activities and contribute to a culture of Contagious Learning within the school.

Required Qualifications
  • “Born again” Christian with an active, growing relationship with Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  • Faithfully attends and supports a local church whose beliefs are in agreement with the CHESS Statement of Beliefs.
  • Agree with, support, and abide by the CHESS Christian School Statement of Beliefs, Lifestyle Statement, and Educational Philosophy.
  • 4-year degree from a college, university, or Bible college.
  • Able to pass a background check.
  • Depending on the grade level and subject matter, specific expertise in the subject area (IE: Financial Planning, Psychology, etc).
  • Able to supervise students during outdoor recess in various weather conditions, including the heat and cold.
  • Strong understanding of creating and implementing effective lesson plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Technological proficiency in educational tools and platforms.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Dedication to fostering a positive, Christ-centered learning environment.
  • Ongoing commitment to professional development and staying informed about educational trends.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous teaching experience in a classroom setting.
  • An understanding of effective classroom management strategies and techniques that foster an environment of discipleship.
