Senior EstimatorThe Senior Estimator
, working under the general direction of the Manager of Estimating, is responsible for providing accurate take-offs and cost estimates with input from all internal resources, including Engineering and Operations Departments. Secures appropriate bids from subcontractors when required, and assists the Manager of Estimating in preparation of large projects as required. Assists in training new department co‑workers.
- Use modeling‑based programs to create take‑off and prepare cost estimates.
- Review scopes of work based upon project drawings, design specifications, production procedures, and appropriate addendums.
- Advanced knowledge of reading and understanding project drawings.
- Collaborate with Sales to obtain all pertinent data per customer’s bid process (prints, specs, samples, project description, start and completion dates, competition).
- Collaborate with Sales on all value engineering opportunities as needed or requested.
- Coordinate input from internal resources and/or Manager of Estimating; use data to prepare bid proposal and/or scope and review it with Supervisor.
- Provide technical (detailed) input for estimating projects, and prepare and check all estimates completed.
- Prepare estimates for processing when required.
- Provide innovative cost‑saving strategies and systems in estimating procedures and techniques to maximize output within budgetary guidelines.
- Manage invitations to bid for subcontractors and vendors to obtain best possible price(s) and complete bid estimate on schedule.
- Maintain strong, trustworthy relationships with current subcontractors and vendors, and establish new relationships.
- Work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Process and file all drawings and specifications after bidding.
- Analyze and maintain historical labor and material comparisons (targeting ±2% on fully developed projects and ±4% on design‑build projects) and prepare recommendations to change appropriate standards annually.
- Review production/performance reports to guide future estimating.
- QC check estimates prepared by other Estimators.
- Represent the estimating department at company/corporate meetings.
- Attention to detail is critical.
- Be committed to the Improvement Process and serve as a role model.
- Cooperate with other departments as required.
- Perform other duties and assignments as required within the scope of job responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a technical or construction‑related field (preferred).
- Basic knowledge of construction and precast concrete with a minimum of five (5) years of construction/precast experience or equivalent training.
- Basic modeling skills (TEKLA, Revit, Sketch Up, etc.) required.
- Proficient in fundamental mathematics.
- Understanding of software products utilized by the company (Microsoft software, computerized estimating systems).
