Job DescriptionThe Research Finance Supervisor oversees the financial operations for clinical research activities including ensuring financial accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across the department’s clinical trial portfolio. The supervisor leads a team of business and financial analysts, monitors study and department expenditures, reconciles financial data, and ensures accurate and timely processing of transactions. A key responsibility includes managing research billing compliance activities in coordination with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
In addition to day-to-day financial oversight, this role leads efforts to evaluate and improve business processes related to clinical trial finance. The supervisor will identify opportunities for increased efficiency, develop and implement new workflows, and collaborate with CTO leadership to ensure financial operations align with best practices and institutional goals.
The Research Finance Supervisor oversees the Research Business and Financial Analysts, and the financial operations of the Clinical Trial Management System (VELOS).
Job Duties / Responsibilities- Plans, directs, and engages in financial and/or accounting operations for clinical research, coordinates with budget preparation and management, and financial reporting efforts.
- Oversee and control financial resources to ensure optimal allocation and usage.
- Will serve as a central point of contact for financial matters related to clinical trials, working collaboratively with CTO leadership and external partners to ensure smooth operations and timely payments.
- Participates in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of automated financial information systems (CTMS).
- Recommends, interprets, disseminates, and implements unit-focused fiscal policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with established rules, regulations, and financial guidelines.
- Ensure high standards and consistency in research processes.
- Supervise and refine ongoing processes to maintain effectiveness.
- Recruit personnel to meet organizational goals.
- Execute and enforce new procedures.
- Address and resolve disputes to maintain a productive work environment.
- Foster a collaborative environment to achieve common goals.
- Develop and implement effective communication practices.
- Facilitate educational programs to enhance team skills and knowledge.
- Strengthen team dynamics and cohesion through targeted activities and support.
- Conduct performance evaluations to assess and improve individual and team effectiveness.
- Encourage and integrate new ideas and approaches to advance department dynamics.
- Manage and support transitions to new processes or systems.
- Continuously enhance processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Organize team meetings.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities to staff based on skills and project needs.
- Oversee daily operations to ensure smooth functioning of research activities.
- Provide support and solutions in the absence of key staff members.
- Develop and maintain a schedule of fees for specific research services.
- Ensure all research activities comply with relevant laws and regulations.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with research sponsors and vendors.
- At least 3 years of finance/accounting experience, preferably in a clinical research setting
- Proficient in computer skills including EMR and Microsoft Office
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology
- Required to complete NCI
- Maintain continuing education hours as required
- Maintain all licenses, certifications, and qualifications current as required
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher; focus in business/public administration, accounting, or related field preferred
- 2+ years finance, accounting, business or related field experience required
- 2-4 years research and oncology experience preferred
- Sitting for prolonged periods of time at a desk
- Computer use that requires visual acuity, typing, use of mouse/keyboard, and staring at a screen for extended periods of time
- Occasionally lifting objects of up to 25 pounds such as files, office supplies, assisting patients when needed, etc.
