Job Summary
The Cardiac Operating Room Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is responsible for assisting with chest exposure and closing during cardiac surgeries, independently performing vein harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafts (CABGs), and supporting complex cardiac cases including structural heart procedures and heart transplants. This role requires a minimum of two years of cardiac RNFA experience and involves collaboration with surgical teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes in a fast‑paced cardiac OR environment.
Responsibilities- Assist with chest exposure and surgical closing during cardiac procedures.
- Independently perform vein harvesting for CABG surgeries.
- Scrub and circulate in complex cardiac cases including CABGs, structural heart surgeries (e.g., Bentall procedure), minimally invasive valve replacements, and heart failure interventions (e.g., Impella).
- Participate in heart transplant surgeries as needed.
- Support surgical teams during DaVinci robotic cases (preferred but not required).
- Maintain sterile field and ensure surgical instruments and supplies are properly managed.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient care and safety.
- Fulfill on‑call responsibilities as per unit requirements.
- Active New York State Registered Nurse license.
- Minimum of two years cardiac RNFA experience.
- Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Telemetry skills.
- Experience with heart transplant surgeries.
- Experience assisting in DaVinci robotic cardiac cases.
- On‑call responsibilities are required according to unit needs.
- Work primarily in a high‑acuity cardiac operating room environment.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts including day and evening shifts.
- 36 or 48 hours per week, primarily weekdays.
- Shifts typically from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM.
- Shift assignments and schedules determined by unit staffing requirements.
