Description and Location

Location:

Division of Biochemical Toxicology, Office of Research, National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) of the U.S. FDA Jefferson Laboratories Campus, Jefferson, Arkansas. Funding provided by the Office of Commissioner (OC), Office of Women’s Health (OWH). The ORISE Research Participation Programs at the FDA provide opportunities to participate in project-specific research and development activities. OWH’s mission addresses issues of women’s health and coordinates efforts to advance a women’s health agenda for FDA.

Research

Project

The major focus is to investigate sex-based differences in the immune response to nanomaterials. Activities include in vitro immunotoxicological studies using cell culture, ELISA, real-time RT-PCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy. The project may include learning physico-chemical characterization techniques and other required approaches.

Learning Objectives

Under mentorship, you will design, perform experiments, analyze data, maintain records, and coordinate research with collaborators. You will collaborate with FDA investigators at NCTR and product centers. You will be encouraged to present findings at internal and external meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Appointment Details

Anticipated

Start Date:

2026. Start date is flexible depending on factors.

Appointment Length: One year, may be renewed contingent on funds.

Level of Participation: Full time.

Participant Stipend: Monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Citizenship Requirements: Open to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizens should refer to program guidelines for acceptable immigration statuses.

Education: Doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., immunology, toxicology, pharmacology, biochemistry, biology, biomedical engineering, or related discipline) received within the last 60 months or anticipated by 5/31/2026.

Qualifications: Doctoral degree as above; degree within 60 months.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience in immunology, toxicology, biochemistry, and biology, with an emphasis on in vitro immunotoxicity assays
  • Prior experience and knowledge in nanotechnology preferred but not required
  • Experience with in vitro immunotoxicity techniques or related fields
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
