Purpose Statement

To manage store operations to achieve maximum sales and profit while maintaining optimum store conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver prompt, courteous, and friendly service to every customer.
  • Attain sales, profit, expense, and labor budgets.
  • Know the budgeted inventory level of each department and work with Department Managers to achieve it.
  • Know the standards of performance and productivity for each department and work with Department Managers to achieve them.
  • Complete and review reports such as shrink, productivity, markdown, DSD price changes, display performance, out‑of‑stocks, safety store audit, transfers, credits, and reclaim as required.
  • Perform and direct:
    1) ordering of merchandise and supplies from the warehouse and authorized vendors;
    2) receiving and handling of merchandise and supplies.
  • Perform and direct all store opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain new items and discontinued items program on a weekly basis.
  • Maintain store condition program, including floors, windows, shelving, equipment maintenance; back‑door and front‑end security procedures; and store safety and fire prevention program.
  • Ensure all DSD products are authorized, checked in properly, recorded in the DSD System/Price Book, and SRP updated on the front‑end systems.
  • Ensure all merchandise is checked out at the correct price and all price changes are completed on the front‑end system and shelf tags.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate service at the front end and service departments by supervising training and scheduling of personnel and handling customer requests and complaints with courtesy.
  • Conduct store meetings with the Store Manager to review merchandising, sales planning, and operating problems, and keep employees informed of matters concerning them.
  • Perform or supervise selection, hiring, and training of store employees; use available training programs and materials.
  • Determine the needs in the store by performing a store walk at least daily, including the backroom, and communicate those needs to Department Managers.
  • Communicate the needs of each area (department) to Department Managers.
Qualifications
Required
  • Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions concerning store/department policy, procedures, and use of equipment.
  • Ability to read and write English; read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper, and forms.
  • Make decisions concerning merchandise placement, pricing, shelf space allocation, employee scheduling, expense control, order placement, hiring/supervision, merchandising plans, departmental policies, and sales promotion.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of regulations/laws relevant to the business operation (Wage & Hour, Family Medical Leave Act, OSHA, ADA, EEO, Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Nutrition Labeling & Education Act, Weights and Measures, etc.).
Preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior grocery store experience.
  • Prior experience as an Assistant Store Manager.
  • Tasks of the Job
  • Mobility:
    Move while conducting training and orientation of personnel, approximately 100 yards; supervise product receipt, movement to floor or storage, opening/cutting cases, inspecting product quality, sorting, building displays, allocating space, ordering merchandise and supplies, cleaning, maintenance, removing trash/debris, price marking and signage, for up to 8 hours.
  • Assistant Store Manager performs the same tasks as any employee while substituting as part of the work crew or training program for new employees.
  • Recognize product details (case, cutter edge, strip, shelf location, size/description/quality), customers, shelf tags, labels, stocking carts, knives, scales, wrappers, department equipment, cooler layout, packaging materials, floor debris, aisle markers, and signs.
  • Perceive color differences on product and labels.
  • Recognize cleaning/maintenance equipment, pallet jacks, forklifts, ovens, mixers, slicers, meat grinder, baler controls, etc.
  • Respond to customer, co‑workers, and vendor questions, comments, and responses.
  • Respond to the sound of baler/forklift/cleaning equipment operation.
  • Use and respond to the intercom/phone system.
  • Read case labels, signs, tags, numbers, aisle markers, department forms, operational forms, reports, and employment forms.
  • Read equipment and chemical warning labels.
  • Work Environment

    Inside and outside work with extreme variations in temperature, dust, and humidity.
