Job Summary
Apply to this requisition and be considered for either Food Scientist I or Food Scientist II. Level will be determined via interview. The role focuses on poultry Cost Optimization, Innovation, Technology Development, and/or Quality improvement, including developing emerging technologies and commercializing new products and processes.
Key Responsibilities- Work with and influence cross‑functional teams (marketing, insights, sales, culinary, FSQA, operations, purchasing) and suppliers to ensure smooth start‑up for new product production processes.
- Modify or optimize existing products, develop specifications for product production labeling, and compile cost analysis information.
- Lead multiple development and optimization projects of moderate complexity from concept through commercialization, including planning, executing experiments, analyzing data, and reporting results.
- Execute development process activities at bench, pilot plant, scale‑up production at federally inspected research facility, and full‑scale commercialization.
- Help teams identify innovation that can be treated as IP to give Tyson a competitive edge.
- Analyze data to build product specifications that are process capable.
- Present technical data or concepts to laypersons at their level of understanding.
- Provide cost analysis information to product management and ensure costing structure meets project financial expectations.
- Collaborate on cross‑functional teams for project completion that supports growth and EBIT strategies.
- Travel to plant product facilities as needed.
- Take on and complete special projects as required.
- Develop culinary samples/prototypes, modify existing products, and develop specifications.
- Education & Experience:
- Food Scientist I: BS, MS, or PhD in Food Science, Meat Science, Food Engineering, or related field. PhD or MS with no experience, BS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience, or no degree with minimum of 8 years experience.
- Food Scientist II: Same degree requirements. PhD with no experience, MS with minimum of 2 years experience, BS with minimum of 3 years experience, or no degree with minimum of 8 years experience.
- Computer
Skills:
Good computer skills; ability to fully utilize MS Office products and Tyson systems. - Communication
Skills:
Good verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills; ability to effectively communicate with cross‑functional business partners. - Special
Skills:
Strong critical thinking, analytical and problem‑solving skills; strong project management skills; strong numerical skills; understanding of product formulation, food processing, R&D process, and regulatory labeling and food safety requirements. - Supervisory: May supervise a team of hourly technicians that support the team of scientists.
- Travel: 25% – 12+ domestic trips per year; travel required to accomplish internal/external customer needs, including meetings, plant production facilities, process troubleshooting.
