Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Overview
As a key member of Smithfield’s Engineering team, the Assistant Plant Engineer will analyze data and build innovative plans to optimize production processes across brands such as Smithfield, Eckrich, and Nathan’s Famous. The role involves managing maintenance and engineering operations, minimizing downtime, and leading cutting‑edge maintenance systems to drive efficiency and reduce operating costs.
Responsibilities- Lead capital project development and post‑approval management, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to safety, food safety, and environmental standards.
- Develop and implement advanced maintenance systems (Preventive/Predictive Maintenance, Total Productive Maintenance, etc.) to maximize output and minimize downtime.
- Supervise maintenance staff, delegate tasks, enforce policies, and uphold plant safety through training and continuous monitoring.
- Troubleshoot equipment failures, analyze problems, and provide long‑term solutions to keep operations running smoothly.
- Collaborate with the Plant Engineer to develop and maintain Key Performance Indicators for maintenance performance, including supplier effectiveness, equipment reliability, and overall equipment effectiveness.
- Drive employee development and coaching to create a positive work environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field and 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- At least 2 years of leadership experience, including team development and management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS systems.
- Advanced technical skills in mechanical and/or electrical domains (e.g., PLCs, instrumentation, mechanical systems).
- Strong knowledge of maintenance systems, work‑order processes, preventive/predictive maintenance, and TPM.
- Experience with exposure‑monitoring equipment and the ability to interpret and communicate results.
- Excellent communication, critical‑thinking, problem‑solving, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Willingness to work long hours and weekends as needed.
- Ability to work well with others in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
- Respectful, approachable, and team‑oriented, fostering strong working relationships.
Work is performed in an office and plant setting that may include wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise can be moderate to loud in production areas. Tasks may involve lifting or moving up to 50 pounds and require frequent standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms.
